Thing is. Naoya and Douma have short lifespans in their series. I would agree thay trying to do something different with a main character for example. There is time for the voice to settle in and grow on people if it’s not what they expected. But Douma and Naoya are such popular characters with not much voice lines in the long run, the risk of fucking it up is too great, when the perfect casting choice is right there. Once they cast someone you can’t change it for them. I’d rather have the right 10/10 voices than gamble for 11/10 voices.

It's not about making the characters OP, it's about them being able to have their arcs and development since they are the protagonists of this stories, while maki and yuta feel more like guests.

Megumi is a completely DIFFERENT character to even foil Naoya.
And Maki is an amazing character herself when is about HER actual character arc.
The issue with all these characters, Megumi, Yuta, Yuuji, Maki, is that Gege tried to smash two different plots into one which fucked up absolutely everyone.

What he should have done (true). Don't publish JJK/Zero. Expand it into a long story, incorporating culling games with Geto and his cult as the main antagonists, and also the clans traditionalists that fuck the new gen over. Make it serialized monthly in a seinen magazine due to the darker nature themes. Rika release will be the climax of everything.
Focus the shounentard fighting with the curses, etc in the JJK serialized weekly, with Sukuna and the Disaster Curses as main antagonists, with Yuji, Megumi, Nobara, etc. Make them a year younger than the other cast (this stays).

Have Gojo and adults or minor characters rotating between the two stories. You can have the ending with Yuta and Yuji, both as special grade shamans, meeting in the last page of their series after they finalized their respective adventures, before the epilogue for each.

We literally would have gotten clan lore if this happened, and even touching the 3 great revenge spirits lore in the Yuta manga, and more Sukuna past in the Yuuji manga. Which we never did because Gege was cannibalizing his own plot.

I like how Modulo handles Yuji and Dabura so far. They seem otherworldly compared to the rest of the cast similar to Gojo and Sukuna in the original series. Being related to Kenjaku, aka Noritoshi Kamo, is the reason why Yuji is the leader of the Kamo Clan. His kids lead the clan in the public while Yuji commands them from the shadows. Yuji isn't a vagrant. He's a very powerful man who won bigly in life, but he'd rather let his family deal with politics and clan issues while he hunts down rogue sorcerers and helps random people with curses. Why? Because he finds pencil pushing boring.

Yuta and Rika should have been the same character, the Queen of Curses, or an alter ego she hulks out as part of the self curse. Basically Yuka, but more Sadako-inspired design with bags. Rika later becomes external shadow/Shikinami, rather than UBW copy, maybe she has to eat a shikinami for copies which plays in horror.

Megumiki personality wouldn't be too different, just a bit tsundere with Yutako, and actuall WOULD have a fucking arc: with the Zenin stuff. Instead of the Sukuna posession thing. Megumi problem is that he was completely aimless as character, and Maki had the Zenin plot, so just put them together.

Yuta would be more fake perky personality to avoid negative emotions because would have transformed her into Rika. That would be good to check out Megumaki.

They would have stories to offer and stand by themselves. Nobara was also a nothingburguer character. That's why she was shelved. She would have worked better as a fun senpai big sister figure because she has no focus on or narrative storyarc to offer.

And by making all trio special means you don't have to replace them which is again why they got fucked over.

Yuji either ages slowly or he's immortal. Remember that Yuji is not normal.

Yuji probably ages slower than Choso because his body is much stronger than Choso's.

Yuji within a few months managed to accomplish what most sorcerers couldn't in their lifetimes. Then there's the whole soul stuff which in itself is complex and only a scholar like Yuki could understand it. Yuji has 60+ years of experience which means CT output is no longer an issue, his body in his prime, two very powerful CTs, pseudo-soul manipulation, can modify Shrine with binding vows like Sukuna, RCT, simple domain and domain expansion. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Yuji knows Divine Domain, the World Cutting Dismantle, Domain Amplification, Fuuga and Flowing Red Scale at this point. Yuji is basically Sukuna with less limbs but extra abilities to compensate. He can definitely hit that Gojo/Sukuna level especially when we know he's been hunting the remaining CG sorcerers.

Nah Yuji at Shinjuku isn't at his full potential, we don't know if his DE was actually a complete one yet, its possible it was actually incomplete like Megumi's. He also hadn't fully mastered Blood Manipulation, if he could pull off all the moves that his Cursed Womb brothers then he'd be very formidable.
