People say Death Note goes downhill after L dies, but honestly it goes downhill way earlier. The best part of Deathnote is the cat and mouse game between L and Kira, but that only lasts surprisingly briefly. Once Misa is introduced and they get put into jail, the show is already on its last legs. Non-Kira Light is a pretty uninteresting character, and them chasing after that stupid corporation sucks. The episode where L dies is good, and frankly I also like the ending. Matsuda shooting Light was really satisfying. But overall, Death Note is a constant downwards spiral from its very beginning.

It was not a very good manga in hindsight
I actually really liked the death eraser oneshot.
While death is natural, coming back to life is not, hence it would make for an even more interesting setting

It sucked way before that. Should've been half as long and just continued the L rivalry instead of Near. The Japanese live action did this right, even though it was low budget. They condensed L and Near into one character.
