To be the best you need 2 things, be good enough and luck, Frieren nailed both, but overall is a pretty uninteresting anime with a pretty standard setting, episode 2 is basically 50% of what you will get and the other 50% are regular battle shounen tropes.

Yeah, because watching the anime equivalent of paint drying is so much better and plot rich.
I fucking hate so called “character-driven” shows, it’s just an excuse for lazy writers to drag on plotlines and show your waifu Mary Sue us being oh so le cute and oh so le fucking quirky while giving us zero character development for an entire season. Even Vegeta legit has way more of a character arc than any of the AI generated bastards in Frieren’s main cast does. I’d chew glass and stick needles in my dick while watching Boku no Pico before watching more of this flaming pile of trash.

To be fair, you have to have a very high emotional intelligence to understand Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. The storytelling is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of post-war existentialism most of the themes will go over a typical shounen viewer’s head. There’s also Frieren’s melancholic worldview, which is deftly woven into her characterization, her quiet reflections on mortality and time drawing heavily from late-Heian mono no aware philosophy. The fans understand this stuff; they have the spiritual sensitivity to truly appreciate the depth of these silences, to realize that they’re not just pauses but profound meditations on the transience of life itself. As a consequence, people who dislike Frieren truly are children; of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the emotional weight in Frieren watching a sunset for five uninterrupted seconds, which itself is a visual haiku evoking Bashō’s Oku no Hosomichi. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those attention-deficient plebeians yawning as the ethereal cadence of Frieren’s pacing unfolds before them. What fools, how I pity them. And yes, by the way, I do have a Frieren tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for those with mature souls only, and even they must prove they’ve transcended attachment before I’ll show it.

DBZ is just alright, mostly just due to it being a classic. I was just comparing both because THAT’s how simple the plot is in Frieren, only Dragon Ball actually has a modicum of character development. Just compare Fern to Gohan. Gohan actually matures and his personality changes as the show goes on. Fern is just a gauche, completely unchanging parody of what an autistic person is like made by a chronic masturbator (mangaka).
As it turns out, being made entirely out of cardboard is in fact not a personality.

The slow life in between the adventures is the point though. Frieren´s journey is about her revisiting her past to learn all the lessons she failed to learn and be able to connect to the world. There is some power flexing here and there but i think that´s mostly to contrast with how unaccomplished she is when it comes to dealing with people.

I wonder if the author was intentionally going for that video game vibe where no one really acknowledges the protagonist for what she is, a hero. In RPGs you can complete quests that basically save the world yet only a handful of key NPCs ever comment on it. Your character might be and look incredibly unique but the world just shrugs and keeps going.

Frieren's world works the same way: there are literal statues of her and her hero party everywhere and she's part of an elf race with single digit population left. Yet nobody even blinks when she walks by.
Anonymous No.283691493 [Report] >>283691688
>>283691386
Probably not, it's just another way to show the passage of time. Most people that know her as a celebrity and a hero already either perished or moved on by the time the series properly starts since it's been like 80 years since they defeated the demon king and most statues crumbled, deterioated or doesn't depict her face properly. Elves might be rare but they're not seen as that special, no elf in the series is popular for just being an elf, all three elves we know are famous for actually doing stuff. There's probably an elf out there that's a store merchant or a farmer living a quiet unremarkable life.

At one point Frieren literally attends a celebration honoring the hero’s party for saving the world and nobody recognizes her. She was standing right next to her own statue.

"NPC"s not recognizing Frieren is at best an intentional trope but more likely it is just bad writing.

My point is the setting the author is going for does not make sense. You can't have a character as unique as Frieren, someone who literally helped save the world just a generation ago and then try to frame her journey like she's some random nobody wandering around.

It would make sense if the main hero guy didn't put statues everywhere and people genuinely don't know about the history but it is not the case
