I just watched my conquest is the sea of stars for the first time, and I'm about to watch the LOGH series
First impressions, is it just me or is Reinhard a lot cooler of a character than Yang?

Man, I'm jelly. I wish I could experience it for the first time again. Also, protip in case you haven't heard it: for the love of all that's holy do not watch the previews. They will shamelessly spoil the biggest moments of the entire series. I would also recommend staying out of LOGH threads for the same reason.

I've always liked Yang more, but I have a soft spot for offbeat eggheads like Yang. I find his flaws endearing. Reinhard is cool though, can't go wrong with either onscreen. Enjoy OP.

Cooler? In a grander, more overstated sense yeah. Yang has a charisma of his own though for being authentic in a different way.

Yang is the better character, even if he is overrated, Gary Stu-ish, and the author's selt-insert a bit. Reinhard may look "cooler" because of the blonde hair. But he's also a product of his environment, as a lot of people forget. The guy is only doing what he knows is right based on the societal expectations that he placed on himself at the time.

Yang only found himself dragged into the war because he only wanted to pursue his hobbies and interests. But reality said otherwise and pulled him into the frontlines to showcase his intelligence. Nobody from the Galactic Empire could fathom a man of humble beginnings with such caliber.

That's why we find him more endearing than Reinhard, even if Reinhard is better for being the more accomplished and merited character in the story.

Conquest functions as a pilot movie and adapts the last two chapters of the first gaiden novel, "Star Crusher", which never got an English translation. It's pretty faithful, and should absolutely be watched first before going into the OVA.
Overture is a cinematic remake of the first two episodes of the OVA, which is the start of the main novel series. It's fairly accurate, but it does throw in some extra character drama stuff that isn't present in either the OVA episodes or the novel. Still definitely worth watching, and a lot of people recommend watching it in place of the first two OVA episodes.

There's honestly not a lot of anime only content in the OVAs, aside from some of the later gaiden storylines.

I watched in the order of
My Conquest -> main OVAs -> Overture
I really didn't like how they handled Jessica and Yang. It made it feel like Jessica didn't have any agency in picking her partner. I just cannot imagine her going so far in activism for her dead husband. OVAs made it so that their attraction for each other got apparent only after Lapp's death and made it feel a bit more realistic.

Reinhardt is a giant hypocryte and Yang-Li is a blind idealist that worships democracy.

It's ultimately a matter of worldview. Ultimately Yang is the more compelling character, because, unlike Reinhard who has everything fall in place for his ascent, it's Yang who has to persevere over the contradictions of his post, without ever forgetting the lives that were lost because of his decisions.
Reinhard, on the other hand, is so weak on that respect that later on, just someone reminding him of one of his screwups is enough to make him faint in the street.
