She's only "generic" by virtue of the game having come out 10 years ago.
Keep in mind, Haydee was 1 year before Nier Automata. A character wearing a tight leotard that exposes her ass wasn't done yet. It was also 3 years before Risk of Rain 2, and I'm fairly certain Artificer was inspired by Haydee (even if they'd never admit it).
2016 was also a year when video games were cracking down on sexy women and they weren't allowed to be thicc, so that also made it notable almost immediately. Steam also hadn't gone full "porn games allowed" yet.

As just a design, Haydee has great color theory, with the primary white color directly contrasting her tan skin. The blue LEDs provide further contrast as a complimentary color to her tan skin. The featureless helmet design hadn't really been done yet and the leotard and heels draw the viewer's attention her legs (the gameplay is very leg and climbing oriented, ass aside).

It was the right combination of things at the right time. The design is good, she's very sexy, and people took notice. At the time the only similar things were like, Fempyro, Tali, and Warframe. Masks weren't really popular yet.

That's simply not how colors work, afaik. You have complimentary colors, which are similar in shade and brightness (like blues and greens), and contrasting colors (like orange and purple), which are different in shade and brightness.

White and dark tan/brown are a popular contrast, there's tons of characters with that color scheme. You don't have to go full black/white to get contrast, that's contrast at its maximum. Although I will point out right away there were plenty of edits that turned her legs black, mostly because people wanted her to be 100% robot, but if you want maximum contrast that was available.

Lighting the skin would reduce the contrast, not increase it. It would fail to bring out her legs and ass the way it was intended.
