Youโ€™re telling me. Meanwhile, the next Mass Effect is basically either BioWareโ€™s lifeline or its death warrant (probably this one). And despite fans begging to play as/fuck more aliens, they still act like niggers about not wanting to.

Well for Failguard most of the original creators left the series years ago and the game was in development hell for over 10 years since fucking EA wanted to originally turn it into a multiplayer game where they can sell there loot boxes. Many who worked on mass effect also moved on so I definitely donโ€™t trust next game and frankly Iโ€™m still salty about mass effect 3 ending even after the โ€œfixesโ€ to it.

I never really cared for Mass Effect, I always thought the artstyle was just hideous and everything looked the same. I've been sinking my teeth into Tainted grail these past few weeks, it's really refreshing to see an rpg that's actually an rpg reminicent to the classics instead of boring modern shit, can even create my own berserk manga pages out of anything cool I find, highly recommend it.

That's basically the mantra of the last decade and half. Everything that was or could have been good has been fucked up, canned before it's time, or deliberately subverted to unpalatability. Meanwhile the shit just won't go away.
And then the attention/money dries up and they're always so surprised.

This is wholly something that can be changed with effort on peoples part. Have discipline, finish your shit, keep to the original vision or have respect for it while shifting to interpretations with actual momentum, don't work with proven liabilities, etc.
I don't accept doomerist attitudes. History is littered with cultures lifting themselves from worse slumps then the current era.

I don't like doomers either, but if you were a part of the small group of people that made things for this anemic niche, you would find it wearing on yourself too eventually. Even the ones that did finish tons of things, had unique visions, or were reliable, have fallen into slumps temporary or not. Some communities have a type of apathy that's infectious and yet are hard detach yourself from after all this time. I hope more optimism comes to this place later, but it's going to take than just a few people making things.

What qualifies as good content?
Does it have to strike a perfect balance between being popular enough to maintain interest in this general, but not so popular that it sees any kind of success off-site?
Is anything that becomes too popular categorized as slop automatically regardless of its quality?
Do you know how many niche communities like this one have fanfics and new art being churned out on a regular basis, and multiple games being developed for them?
Not fucking many.
I think a lot of people here just have an attitude problem.

>I think a lot of people here just have an attitude problem.
Not a lot, but enough for it to be heard often. Who the fuck knows what's good content here, because this niche is way broader than what's normally posted. Compared to other generals, these threads get good amounts of oc. Some of which gets slept on. Despite what I said, I don't think anything's slop, but hearing it so much uncontested makes you question it. It's a struggle to keep your head up when it looks like you're failing as a creator all the time. Even if you know what you make is good by your own and others standards. It's just that in these days, it feels like no matter how much you do or improve, it's not enough. All you can do to fix that is to keep working, but it doesn't really end.

Ehh I thought the series looked plain ugly. Majority of the weapons and armor were absolutely hideous, nothing looks good and most of the environments looked the same, nothing really distinguished between alien and human everything shared that ugly white plastic paneling. Maybe it's my bias from Halo speaking but I always thought mass effect was really ugly, especially the weapons they all look like shitty nerf toys.

You are valid in preferring a specific weapon asthetic, but it does disclose some of your autism that you can't appreciate when a narrative needs to exist in a world where weapons are less cool.

Think about it like this, what if a modern GWOT war movie had a squad that cleared urban centers room by room with 'big ass swords' because it looked 'cool as shit'. Yes I'll give you that it looks cool. But everyone would mock you for being obsessed with your power fantasy movie.

> Sword guy gets cucked by technological advancement, thinks these new "guns" have lame asthetics.

Why are you bitching about this? They are hyper railguns. The whole gimmick of the "mass" effect was accelerating matter to superluminal speeds, and they used the same tech in the guns to propel smaller bullets (than what we comparatively use) to a higher speed, i.e. a railgun.

Like, they messed up some things, then invented new bullshit, then fucked those things and the rest of it up too, then maintained doing this for a million chapters finding new and inventive ways to extend the ruination of what could have easily been a five chapter long silly meme story about herbivore aliens being terrified of humans.

Right? I don't think I've ever read anything this badly written extended out for this long. It bizarrely seems to compromise on every single piece of it's original premise, coming up with new bullshit left and right like the author was afraid to come up with any kind of actual conflict that might paint any parties in a bad light. Humans? Perfect little war god angels who don't even eat REAL meat, actually. The Arxur? Poor victims of societal manipulation and genetic engineering, actually. The Federation? Mentally retarded glue huffers who are capable of managing a truly massive coalition of civilizations without it collapsing in on itself, actually.
The only redeeming factor about NoP is that thinking about pinning down a Venlil and watching them squirm and hyperventilate at my gaze passing over their body like a hunk of meat gives me massive boners. Rape Everything That Exists.

as far as the games go it is rather fast but extended universe states that the prophet's plan to make the jirilhanae the covenant's new useful idiots was put into play way back during harvest, 25 years earlier. more recent events like the heretic uprising and the assassination of regret sped things along.
i'd also venture to guess that the wookiebrutes belong to tartarus' pack exclusively. they're only seen around him, on high charity and the second halo when he lands there.

You don't really need to read NoP so long as you understand a couple of (retarded) plot points. Aliens are either mega murder cannibal lizards or brain melted furry xenos scared of anything and everything, there was a Venlil-Human exchange program, bombing of Earth happened, Federation conspiracy revealed (I barely even remember the actual conspiracy), and probably some other unimportant bullshit that doesn't matter. Most stories are filled with so much community headcanon that has basically become the "real" canon since the actual story is so boring and drawn out, so you'd probably be lost either way with stuff like the fanon interpretation of exterminators and "predator disease". The majority fanfics are barely any better than the actual story anyway, but there are some nice ones here and there. New York Carnival is a good romance I think. But I also have an incredible slop tolerance, so take that into account I guess.
None of it is really that worth getting into in retrospect, I think I'm just an hmofa faggot who doesn't know where else to get his predator/prey dynamic xeno slop from.

I like a mix of both. The older I get, the more disbelief I am willing to suspend. Not every sci-fi setting needs to be grounded like the Expanse. Throw in some gravity plating and inertial dampeners, and maybe the aliens are just bipedal people with 3 fingers and digitigrade legs and they're purple. Tell the story you want to tell.

This is literally also the cannon of series "Legacy of the Aldenata" by John Ringo coincidently, which is like 12 books now.
>brain melted furry xenos scared of anything and everything
This seems to be a really popular trope in sci fi. Presumably there are tons of "Eden" planets out there where evolution was so mild that there where no predators, or no evolutionary competition between developing more sophisticated survival mechanisms. So these creatures are weak and peaceful as shit, with brittle bones, because that's all they ever needed.
They view earth as a death world due to our intense evolutionary coemption and predators.

I don't like this trope very much, always felt a little too masturbatory. If I remember correctly this is actually subverted in NoP with all the xenos being manipulated societally and genetically by a sort of over class of certain species to make them weak and retarded. Including the people eating lizards, apparently. The Venlil's home world Venlil Prime, or formerly Skalga, used to be more dangerous before they cleaned the problematic areas with anti-matter bombs and the Skalgans then subjected to a couple millennia of dysgenics. They don't really play with these ideas at all or try to make them make sense and drop them instead to focus on like, insectoid alien kids with (apparently actually diagnosed by doctors???) autism and hyperfixations and really poorly written nonsensical drama or whatever instead.

pretty much, the series is explicitly "humanity fuck yeah" the invading reptilian poslians are the only we ever kinda get to know, and it's barely anything since only 1 in 10,000 poslians are sentient, the rest are just dumb murder drones.
There is scheming xeno race pulling the strings causing all the fighting behind the scenes, but if those books where written I didn't read them.

I do prefer "humanity fuck yeah" story telling approach to the whimpering beatnik of star trek though, or at least something along the lines of Mass Effect where humanity still has some teeth and isn't entirely neutered.

I'm kinda the opposite where I think scifi leans too human-centric by majority (Mass Effect especially annoys me, slotting humanity into HFY results without explaining why humanity is so important), so I imagine up settings where humans are small players or recovering from being stepped on. Gives importance to them from the results they barely achieve rather then slotting them into the big damn heroes of the galaxy that everyone adores or envys.
Used to be baffled by why HFY think humans are mistreated in scifi, now that takes a backseat to being baffled by how low in quality in every department HFY always is.

idk, these Arxurs do seem to have been at least somewhat inspired by the posleen, but they aren't 100% copies. Posleen are hermaphrodites, more technologically advanced, tauric reptile creatures that travel the galaxy more like scouring swarms of locust. They don't communicate with other races or enslave them like these arxurs, they eat them. They where a modified bioweapon race that got loose if I remember the lore correctly, think they ate their masters.

Not that anon, never played the games either, but you can tell by vibes. Your crew gets 1 of every alien, then the rest are human. You do at least 1 mission related to every race, then all the personal missions are like, humans made a cloning facility, humans accidentally made a supercollider too good, humans toyed with a dormant megavirus.
The same reading applies to Star Trek too. The Federation is 85 percent human, all the colonies they visit are human, the headquarters is on earth. Every alien culture has 1 dimension, whereas humans are just as multifaceted as we are in real life. It's like a peaceful HFY. HFY lite.
Again, I have not played ME, just observed a bunch. These opinions are based on vibes. I have consumed a lot of Star Trek though, which was a big inspiration for ME.

For me it depends on the type of story. I like the idea where humans are physically stronger than most races if they're technically behind every other races as it gives them some reason to actually be threatening even while at a disadvantage. But I do find it boring as hell when humans have all the advantages as it really just lessens any tension when you know that humans have better gear, stronger, and just plain smarter than everyone else.

If you want your humans to be technically more advance, stronger, or whatever than the aliens in your story go right ahead but you're going to need to give the aliens some kind of advantage so it makes sense they're not just curb stomped in every fight they get in and vice versa if you want your story/setting to have humans on the Blackfoot.

you play a human in earth's space navy, and humans are a recent addition to a galactic coalition that pretty much every member sees as a bunch of dumbasses. of course your ship which belongs to your government is going to be primarily crewed by humans? quarians are primarily focused on securing resources for their flotilla, turians don't like you because of the war, krogans prefer to be mercs, asari would arguably fit, but they're also incredibly snobby when they aren't quietly genociding every species, and salarians think we're morons. it's not that they're the center of the universe, it's that they are your playable faction because people relate to being... people.

as for star trek, that was mainly for budgetary reasons, but also the aforementioned relate-ability. the alien cultures being planets-of-hats, is more of a tool to explore the human condition through different lenses, while also telling an entertaining sci-fi story

It's worth noting that a similar logic occurred with ME, citing budget and engine limitations but also in secret there were massive talent issues (EA is only part of the equation to Bioware going bad and probably not the lethal part) for limitations on depictions of the aliens and what they do. It took like three games to see female turians and hanar doing anything. Andromeda had like two new races that weren't robots or animals.
And yes it wasn't helped by a bunch of staff being low-empathy/imagination brainlets who kept shoveling in more humans for "relatability" because they can't comprehend what they don't see in the mirror... which we'd see germinate throughout their post-KotOR games and culminate in Veilguard which was all about the devs and their personal delusions, but now that's veering out of xeno territory.

The fact Turians obviously have lip animations which make absolutely no sense in the context of how their bodies work always triggered me. But yes fuck normies.

BioWare had talent but just like a lot of these formerly good studios it really relied on the fact the talented people working there had the energy to power through bullshit. As soon as they dropped under a critical mass the problems just all overwhelmed the good parts. It's why ME3 got such a shitshow ending. EA didn't force the ending, the writers themselves fucked up on making one.

The craziest thing in BioWare story has to be Anthem though. Probably the only game in history where a EA Games executive coming in, firing people and demanding story and gameplay changes was a GOOD thing that led to a game being better (even if the result was a meme tier failure of a game)

you just learned it was to 1-up soviet missile technology, or is it some other reason?
also yeah i'm kinda saddened we aren't even trying to set up an inter-system mining operation, picking select asteroids out of the belt between mars and jupiter and mining them for metals. i've often wondered how we'd even do that sort of thing, or whether it'd be better to process them in space, or carefully direct them back to earth...
there'd have to be some dedicated zone on the planet we'd dedicate to dropping asteroids on, otherwise we'd risk massive destruction. i was thinking the middle of the outback would probably work, as there's nobody around for miles and miles, and they already have the train and trucking infrastructure, but maybe there's other options. you definitely wouldn't want to hit the ocean, because you'd lose your payload and cause tsunamis tho...

Getting an asteroid to earth would just create an ore deposit, which you'd still have to mine. The profits would be similar to what you would get from mining a regular deposit, except the regular deposit is already there and you just need to buy the mineral rights which would be millions/billions of dollars cheaper than getting an asteroid here. Thus, asteroid mining would only really be useful if we depleted all deposits of a specific resource on earth.
Ignoring all the technical limitations.

You are forgetting about one important aspect: polution.

Mining shit like heavy metals and rare earths is dirty as fuck. China has entire villages with life expectancy worse than middle ages Europe because of mining runoff, the kids who mine cobalt on the Congo to make lithium batteries work all get poisoned to shit, and it takes a lot of acids and harsh chemicals to process ore into usable metal.

If you do it on Earth, mining the Niobium and Cobalt and shit means paying a shitload of money to clean shit up or else accepting the land will be poisoned for decades if not centuries.

If you are doing it in space though... there is nothing to poison. You can use as much mercury and arsenic to mine gold as you want, it won't go anywhere. You can use superconcentrated cancer juice to process the ore into Iridium cause there is no ground water to worry about. You don't even need to worry about electricity in some cases, you can use mirrors to make solar furnaces which will conveniently be working in a hard vacuum and melt your stuff into pure ingots without expensive closed system furnaces.

And let me tell you, those poisonous and cancerous chemicals aren't just used for laughs: shit really REALLY makes it a lot easier to do chemistry.

That would crash the price to process ore in space compared to Earth. You could fuck over the entire competition by selling your metals and rare earths at a lower price but at the same time a higher profit margin. (Assuming of course the cost to send cargo to space is low enough)

>>8901105
>>8901110
And these help underline how recurring the smallmindedness factor is. "Eh we've got that stuff here", "eh think of the economy", when most children with basic first world educations could tell you that shit won't last forever and artificial equivalents might not exist/be feasible. People way smarter and with more reach then kids have been screaming this stuff for before the goddamn first world war.
And this shit takes time to develop, so when shit hits the fan with resources or population or whatever to the point of being unavoidable then that's a problem that will hit critical mass BEFORE you figure out how to do arcologies in space let alone terraforming the chalk orb that's always been overhead... and those are basic bitch steps before starting the basic bitch steps needed to begin the development of actual space travel so that can develop to the point where we can begin the process of searching for our alien waifus.
Nah bro that's risky and hard work, just feed Africa for like a month with that money.
FUCK
I genuinely feel like an interior lifeform after looking into this. Like, bugs that exist to live for one day and exist to breed for the next batch to do the same thing feel less pointless and dumb then we are, because they're actually oblivious by nature and never fuck anything up in their lives.

The problem with going out and getting an asteroids worth of gold or diamonds or other precious metals is it would tank the value of the stuff, and render the whole mission a bust.
Gold has a lot of electrical and chemical applications, but most of it's value is tied into us being dumb fucking monkeys who like shiny rocks for jewelry. If we suddenly inundate the gold market with 5X more gold, then all gold is gonna become worthless, and people would stop valuing it for jewelry in the same way.
That's less of an issue with cobalt, lithium, etc. but they still risk totally upending the metals market and rendering the whole asteroid mining mission unprofitable.

Nah, Halo 1, and Halo 2 especially for it's time was groundbreaking kino, the graphics where insane for the period, and the plots where fantastic. Comparing the original games to the slop that 343 pushes out now just shows you where not playing when the originals where released.

I like the idea of ODST, but after the graphics of Halo 2, halo 3 looked awful.
My favorite's where 2 and reach, I don't really care about "master chief" I was way more invested in my own personalized spartan and squad that slowly dies off on reach.
I'd love to see them do the same thing again with an ODST team, so long as the graphics don't suck and 343 isn't involved.

Personally, if we're going to have a video game telling a story, I'd prefer a new studio to the big bastards who are being driven for profit and not pleasure. God bless both Larian and Sandfall for reminding people what good fucking story telling looks like.

Also, if we're going to have alien species, can we PLEASE have some that aren't just humans with additional bits stapled on? Don't get me wrong, I'm Team Tali'zorah all the way, and I'd love for a lean mean Sangheili mommy to sit on my face...but where's the love for the non-bipeds? If there can be hot fuzzy bear love in Baldur's Gate, why can't I fertilize the eggs of my young Rachni Queen?

Side note; do we have a possible list of artists that are down to doodle some wholesome degeneracy?

I think the whole Larian bear sex thing was a watershed moment. The game dev community realized there's an actual market for weird shit like this, plus steam is full of erotic games now. I could totally see a game offering an extreme /xeno/ love interest in the coming decade (likely in the upcoming mass effect)

It's only gay tranny sex if you make your character a gay tranny that then has sex with the bear.
The biggest game of the year, what some consider a "top ten of all time" even has TWO weird non human sex scenes in it, and it didn't result in the games immediate cancellation and riots, it's earned over half a billion instead.
In 2005 San Andreas had a NON PLAYABLE sex game, and it caused a government investigation by the fucking former first lady.
We've come a long way in 20 years, and Baldur's Gate was the signal to games producers that "anything goes", that's a pretty watershed moment imo

pretty sure most of the halo hate comes from when it was on top and everyone tried to copy it but most fell flat so the style of halo FPS just left a bad taste in people's mouth and since no one could remember the bad imitators just the lack luster experience they gave they just shifted the blame onto halo.

Halo was good, a lot of the "Halo killers" they made to try and beat it, not so much.

You can't make much money off of xenofags. I don't know why anyone would expect good high quality stuff to flow for free for this. Even the only xeno adjacent game couldn't make enough money to go full-time. And there's especially no xeno focused content creators that make any money from drawing for places like this either (sadly, some of them might not like the type of audiences this niche attracts.)
