The free version is very limited. That said you do not need to maintain a sub to keep using it. You can pay for the month and then cancel your subscription and keep using whichever version you got the key for. You would only need to sub again if you wanted to update to a newer version if the update happened after your sub was up.

Welp I updated my Reshade to 6.5.1 and now it won't work in VR under any circumstance, it looks like it's rendering the depth buffer of the desktop into each eye
How to fix? I tried every single depth buffer option with either no success or crashing

It barely has any features now, but uses the far superior Genesis 8 models (vam1 uses Gen2), plus it has much better skin shaders. It just looks better.
They finally released the unity toolkit that lets you import DAZ characters, before this you could only use like 3 built in chars. So this is the point where VaM2 is starting to become actually worth touching at all.

What's going on with some of my materials? I made sure my drivers are up to date as it almost seems like a gpu issue but this only occurs with a few characters. I've tried redownloading and replacing the vars affect but the issue persists.

Something is goofing the normal maps during initial load. I can clear the limb texture and select the same normal map that initially loads and it will display fine. Guess the workaround is just to save new presets.

I've been trying to recreate my miqo'te from ffxiv. This has been an off and on project for a while now. She still looks like a cosplayer rather than portraying the actual race but I'll get it down eventually. I know there are miqo'te head morphs I can use that people have imported into vam but they just look a little off to me.

You can look in the "Looks" section on the hub for any decent model with flat boobs and then try to scale it down to your prefered size, that can work reasonably well.
That being said, if the result is not cute and funny enough for your liking you gotta bite the bullet, get youself a burner e-mail, fire up the Tor and go to ATF's VAM section. Most of the shit they got in here is proper pedo shit, like, toddlers and stuff, but if you looks around there are decent enough mid-late teen models, you can grab those.
In the end however, the best shit is the shit you made yourself. For me, personally, I just got UzielStrike morphs pack with aging chart included, set the parameters to around 16-17 age and go fucking crazy from there, it's all I ever will need to be honest, any lower and it's too far for me.

I do, not a lot, but I have found it being really useful for making mid-late teen characters, girls and boys alike. Really easy to use, instead of tweaking multiple torso and limb scale morphs just use the aging chart as a baseline, then tweak the model to my liking.

So, it's safe to exclude .var files in Windows Defender, right? They're just zips and it really wants to sniff them each time. The contents get extracted to disk somewhere before being run, right?

Also, excluding vam.exe while it's starting cut my loading time by like two thirds and yes I'm on an ssd and have plenty of ram. This is of course an awful, awful idea and nobody should do it.
