I'll be going back to college in a little over a year and I want to try to do the friend thing right because I have no friends and college is supposed to have nerdy people I can hopefully relate to. Are there any good ways to start making friends with people that attend there right now? I live about 2 hours away from the university at the moment so I was hoping for both online and offline ways to meet people initially.

Are there freshman orientations this summer? For example, a club I was in and I’m still in the Discord is tabled yesterday and even though you’re not a not a student yet, they be more than willing to let you join them if you were into that.

Hmmm I'm still looking but it looks like it's exclusively for people coming in during the fall semester.

So you're saying to start joining discord servers for clubs at the school? I have a bad habit of just lurking in discord servers but I can try that. I didn't know they'd let me participate if I'm not a student.

No I understand that it’s only for students. At my college they’re tabling at the student center so if I lived closer I could walk in briefly and say hi because I just graduated and I know everyone that would be tabling. But maybe that wasn’t a good idea so never mind all that. It’s probably hard though. 2 hours is kinda far. Why aren’t you going in the fall? I wouldn’t they’d admit students for spring or fall 2026 this early.

Also, for the club I’m referring to, I found on my college’s campus events/organizations forum and hit join and there was an email sent out a few days later about where the first meeting was so I showed up to it. To be clear, I was a student. I just came up with my advice on the fly.

Ah yea I see. Maybe I'm getting too ahead of myself. I guess I should've put this in my post but I dropped out of school halfway through my degree and I've been working for the last few years. By the time I'm taking classes again I'll be in my mid-20s. I was just wondering if I can meet people early because it's hard to make friends outside of college and I'm kinda lonely honestly.
>2 hours is kinda far.
It's not so bad because it's in the city where all the interesting stuff is. I'd probably be looking for friends in that area anyways.

I'm not officially admitted yet but I fulfill the requirements for their transfer pathway that guarantees admission and I'm pretty set on going there. Right now I'm just looking around for an apartment to rent that's close to the school.

Guess I should’ve figured that.

What’s your job?

I don't want to say exactly because it's pretty niche but it's a nightshift security sort of thing. I'm on a contract which is why I'm planning for school so far ahead.

overthinking it. you can make friends first day. people will believe whatever image you want to project. just go to all the nerd clubs and stuff. hell you can and should talk to non nerds too. you're not stuck in the same friend ghetto as before.
