I want to ask a female friend of mine out on a movie date. Should I do it face to face or send her a message? I'm asking since we don't have much time to talk in private IRL.

first date is about seeing if there is any chemistry worth pursuing by way of talking with each other. Regarding how to ask her out, in person while you're both alone is best, second best is video chat, third is text message.

So it's because you don't talk a lot?

yes. there is not a connection made at a movie. You do that when you already know each other.

ALWAYS face to face
ALWAYS short and interactive (90min-120min)

movie violates that. if she's not feeling it being next to you for 2 hours will make her seethe

first date you always have to account for she might just absolutely hate your stink or other minor thing and you have to accept she can just walk away. movie doesn't allow that.
