All forms of empathy went out the window, I didn’t care anymore cause I found him cringe

I think people are too groomed to follow certain types of storylines and anything offbeat really messes with their ability to process emotions. Foreigners visiting America in the distant past noted how Americans would watch stories that were basically the same retellings over and over again, basically the Campbellian Hero's Journey, but slowly America infected the whole world, and now everyone else watches the same story told over and over again too. A moment like this creates a sense of dissonance in your self-perceived Hero Journey and because your friend had died and that his last post he seems doomed to never complete his Hero Journey either which makes him a side character in your mind.
