This is a public service announcement about SSRI’s.

These drugs absolutely ruined my life. They destroyed my reward system and turned me into an addict. They made me lose my career. They destroyed my health. They made me unable to care about or see my life deteriorating around me. They destroyed all my drive and motivation to fix my life. They destroyed all my confidence. I was not suicidal before I took these drugs. Now I am because of what they did to my life. I will never be the person I was before I took these drugs. I had no idea what REAL depression was before I took these drugs.

Anyone who says these drugs work has not built up a tolerance yet. They stop working well after about 2-3 years.

If you’re thinking about taking them, consider that the side effects are potentially way worse than the depression you’re experiencing right now. If you’re a woman, you cannot get pregnant on these drugs (they cause birth defects) and they can take YEARS to get off of. Doctors will not tell you any of this shit. Biggest regret of my entire life is ever taking these drugs.

They made my depression 1000x worse. Unless you have a plan to kill yourself, or are seriously considering it, get therapy first.

These drugs are harder to get off than heroin. I’ve been in withdrawal for 10 months and I tapered them correctly.

The medical industry does not warn you about how bad these drugs are. Doctors do not even know. I hope someone will be helped by this post.

sorry to hear that, but counterpoint to OP I took SSRIs for about 6 months when I was dealing with major depression and in therapy. They definitely helped me a lot. They didn't cure my depression or anything, but there was a noticeable effect that my emotional lows were not as low as they had been, and I was actually able to be positive sometimes. It worked just as my psychiatrist said it would, to give me some emotional breathing room to work with my therapist to develop strategies to better manage and control my emotions. Whereas before going on the meds I was a typical pathetic neet staying in my room playing computer games, masturbating, and watching anime all day, and not at all receptive to my deeply concerned parents attempts to get me out of the house, to say nothing of getting a job.

I also decided on my own to go off of them, and just stopped taking them when I felt like I was better. I've heard subsequently you're not supposed to do that, but I didn't have any problems or withdrawal symptoms.

So it did work very well for me.

Those are problems that get solved on their own when you go out and live life. If your parents simply forced you to get a job, you wouldn’t do those things anymore. Your problems were because you didn’t have a job.

I was not able to go out and get a job due to my depression. I hated my life, hated myself, and thought everything was pointless. My depression was very debilitating.

This is the truth. I came to the same conclusion that OP did eventually and have began tapering off, but it sucks.

Like OP said, it has a lot of negative effects that you don't start realizing until later. It killed my sex drive for one which makes having a relationship much harder when you can't reliably get it up; I know this is the reason at least one date ghosted me after.

Also while you feel "good", it also just makes you OK with everything. Sure I don't feel bad, but I don't feel anything more than that either. I'm just comfortable numb.

As I've been tapering off I can see bits of my real self start to come back out again. Like I can feel myself start to get genuinely excited and passionate again. Of course, along with the highs is also the lows, like boredom and lack of motivation, but these things start to self-correct as your brain chemistry returns to normal.

Still, it's much better to never touch these things than get on them in the first place. As cliche as it sounds, exercise and getting enough sleep are huge ways to improve your mood. I started fixing those things + nutrition, and my natural mood increased a lot to the point that I don't think I need SSRI's anymore.

I took them for like 3 months and they didn't do anything. I was on 25mg of Lexapro, which is on the high side. I felt basically the same way I always do: depressed. Eventually my prescription ran out and I decided not to bother making an appointment to get a refill. No idea how people develop a dependency on this shit, it's like getting addicted to cold meds.

You’re a fool. They literally rewire the brain. Of course there is dependency. Your brain doesn’t just go back to normal in a day if you miss a dose.

I don't know what to tell you, I'm just telling you how it felt when I took them. Maybe Zoloft or the other ones are stronger, but I had no noticeable differences in my mood on Lexapro vs off it. I literally quit by accident.

Quick question first
If you had diabetes and high blood pressure and your doctor gave meds for it to help you live, like metformin or lisinopril for example, yet you continue to eat pizza/donuts/burgers/fried foods/cakes/milkshakes/sodas everyday and your diabetes and heart problems worsened, would you also say that those meds don't work and ruined your life?

One of two things is happening here, either you're lying about what your doctor said, or your doctor didn't give you the full story
SSRI's/Mood stabilizers/Anti-psychotics are not, and have never (legally) been allowed to have been pitched to you by a licensed professional as some sort of depression cure all
They are TOOLS, not the cure. They HELP, they don't solve it completely
If you're depressed because you're alone/isolated/no job, taking those meds without making life changes, just like in the example above, will do you no good
They will not kick your ass into gear, give you motivation, or whatever other miracle you're looking for, they are a crutch so you can solve your own problems with a little assistance

So tell me, which is it, did your doctor lie and say it will magically fix you, or did you simply not care to read instructions that come with meds or do any research at all?

Look into sodium-free, potassium-free salts, some are even recommended to wean you off salt entirely
