I am an Indian PhD student in the USA. I have never explicitly faced racism in real life. But on social media, like Twitter and Instagram, people of western countries really seems to hate Indians.

Given the right circumstances I would stay in India but my academic subject is very niche and there is very little opportunity or benefit in doing a PhD and post doc in this field. Therefore I decided to do it in the USA. I honestly don't want to harm Americans by being here. I just wanted to do my research. I'm a very discreet person and I rarely go outside my apartment and my university campus, so I don't get to interact with the general American public that much.

I made a thread about this on /sci/ and I only got extremely hateful replies, people telling me to kill myself and calling me a subhuman, scammer etc.

Is it better to find a non-academic job in India (like an IT job) rather than pursuing an academic career in America amidst so much negativity and anger?

4chan and much of the online world isn't representative of the real world. Not only because the demographics of people posting here are different, but also because people often behave and think differently from how they behave online. Especially if you're going to be interacting with smarter and better educated people, they tend to be less hateful or basic with their thinking.

That being said DEI exists for a reason. However India has its own forms of discrimination as well.

I think most Americans do hate us, they just don't say it in real life. Honestly the discrimination I've faced here is very mild. There was one professor who really hated me for some reason, but most people were normal. Once the college campus cops sent me a warning letter because my roommate left the stove running. I was the one who stopped the fire and informed them about everything, but still somehow I was blamed. I am not sure if it's just racism or they accidentally mixed up my name with my roommate's. I didn't bother trying to correct the record in any way because I don't feel comfortable talking to those guys. And every single time in the airport security I am stopped for no apparent reason. This isn't something that happens only to Indians, but anyone who looks Muslim or Arab.

Honestly Indians are also very racist, but it's my own country and my family is rich so I rarely face any racism. My main issue is that my brain can't deal with all the negativity. My studies are extremely tough and I am always thinking about how much Americans hate us. It really fucks with my head. I could just completely stop using social media, but then it would be running away from the reality that most Americans do not want any Indians living here. You can see how insane the replies in this thread are. Can we pretend that most Americans don't hate Indian immigrants?

hey I'm Indian American. Don't take the online racism too seriously. It's mostly people who don't leave their house much or are otherwise irrelevant in the sense you're not going to run into them anyway.

I work in tech and have lived in SF and NYC. Never once had an experience with racism there. I'd go as far as to say that being openly racist against anyone, including Indians, would be social sooicide - women in liberal cities don't take kindly to racism at all, and if they don't like you you're not getting invited to any parties, so it kind of keeps things in check.

Also there are tons of Indian Americans like me in NYC and Cali so people are pretty well acclimated to them and they're really integrated into society. Dating has never been an issue, nor has making friends.
