how do you keep friends?

I have an excel spreadsheet of all my contacts with pertinent information like their birthdays, notes on their likes and dislikes, family status, but most importantly date of last contact. That way I can periodically send them a text or email to stay in contact.

I know this is a bit more extreme than most people, but it works for me and has especially helped with professional contacts and building my book of business through work being referred to me by my contacts.

You get lucky. Really, most of the friends you make in life are temporary one way or another. I've made friends at all my jobs and school over the years, and we're always happy to see each other again when we do get the chance to, but we just don't talk nearly as much as we used to and that's fairly normal. You'll only get a handful of partner-for-life best friends in life if you're lucky. Most only get one or two, an many more don't get any. Just cherish the time you have with people.
