This has really been bugging me. I just graduated with a CS degree and back to living my parents. Never got an internship and for a very long, it was clear that I hated CS and just wanted to finish the degree. So I basically I just want to start over.

Today I receive a call from a guy about a security guard job I applied for. It’s in the city I went to college to and it’s too far to commute back and forth so I’d have to move. I think moving out is a possibility but only because my partners would be paying the rent since I only have $2,000 dollars in my bank account. I don’t know if that’s the right thing to do or if people even do that.

My sister’s moving into an apartment for college in August so this conversation is coming up constantly. My mom’s always saying how she wants to get rid of a bunch of stuff or “you’ll need this someday when you’re living on your own” and it just makes me feel more guilty.

why do you hate CS?

t. wants to get into CS, but the calculus intimidates me.

I would definitely not take that security guard job. Once you start doing something else you get locked into it. Hold out for something in computer work. If you think getting a good job is low probability now, wait until youre in a totally different role and industry. And yea maybe when youre 22 the prospect of wage slaving is horrible and it is. But you should do it for a few years and let yourself wiser, and even watch other people crash out from their fucked up choices. Just keep telling your parents you are looking for a job. Get a job in computers, it doesnt really matter what you do for now. You can change your mind later. But dont choose downward mobility this young.

first of all, you got the paper, and a big chunk of people don't finish. You're already ahead. You don't have to work in CS, but you should totally lean into anything you learned from it. how to formulate a design plan, looking as systems, all the skills that can be applied in ways outside of CS.

second whatever your 'partner' means, its risky if its a romantic one. Shacking up has risks that aren't always clear when you're in your early 20s. be careful.

third, if its not a good move for you then don't let your parental nagging get you down. its just noise and bluster if all they do is say things. they're just worried about you probably, but don't know what else to do.

well, that changes some things.

If your parents see value in you moving out so much they would pay rent, even for a while, thats something to definitely consider. Especially if you're not the type to blow money and will actually save, work your way to a better job, stick to a life plan, etc etc.

is chat GPT that good for CS? or any IT related courses in general? i wonder if it has anything to do with how many CS grads we have now. they've practically exploded in abundance.

this makes me feel a little bit more confident in dipping my toes in this. don't think i want to go full on CS, though. i want to do a two year associates at a community college, and possibly transfer to uni from there if i can't get a decent job.

Well I wasn’t full on CS either. The degree is computer and information technology with an emphasis in web development but I didn’t put all that but I have an associate’s in computer science. The only advanced CS class I had take was data structures and algorithms. Some professors were just very lenient ChatGPT is pretty good but it makes lots of mistakes with calculus and I think it’s better now but sometimes when you try to ask for clarification, it’ll think you’re correcting it.

My main issue with CS is that growing up people, mainly my mom, said I would do well in CS. This is mainly based on that I played a lot of flash games in elementary school and in first grade, had an obsession with turning on computers in the classroom. I wasn’t thinking of it as a career. Before I went to community college, my mom and I talked to the admissions counselor. My state has a program for free community college and I because of the stipulations, I would’ve never gotten it anyway. Another was that couldn’t be undecided so my mom suggested I do computer science and I never gave a thought to anything else.

if you follow my reply chain, you'll notice it was never said you should get a CS job. the other anon is flapping their jaws about that.

the point is that you came away with something by finishing. You got paper, and you got some skills. so what if you're shitty at CS. there's so many crossover skills in CS, you need to focus on what you can make work in your favour. Take the security job short term, who gives a shit, its always easier to get a job when you have a job.

>Never got an internship
how the fuck did you never get an internship?

i go to a big party school, literally procrastinated until the day school was over, rushed to look for anything, and I still got hired for a local SAAS jr dev thing

getting a real job is hard but i don't understand how you didn't get an internship unless you put in literally zero effort ever

what is so confusing? programming isnt so bad. structuring big projects properly can be pretty annoying though.
