>moved to a eastern european country 6 years ago
>still can't speak the language above a basic level
>recently got a job at a local company, but everyone will speak english
>I know for sure my co-workers will ask me why I don't know more than the basics while I have lived here for 6 years and will hate me for it.
I can't really say that I have adhd and can't focus on things consistently, so I need some other excuse
any advice is appreciated, thank you

I could give 100 valid excuses, but the main one is that the grammar is difficult and I have no real reason to learn it other than "respecting the culture in the country you live in" which isn't really motivating.

I tried applying for the free language course which the state offers, but its only valid for people who come from outside the EU which is unironically funded by the EU

Try learning the language with mnemonics, a completely normal person can shuffle a deck of cards pull the cards out in a random order recall the entire order they pulled it from memory with only 5 minutes of study. Maybe you pull a king of diamonds- you might look at a cabinet in your house and picture donald trump standing there holding a giant diamond to associate an image with the king of diamonds card, then you pull another card and the scene evolves to another point in your house, theres a ton mnemonic methods, its best to use them all at once, and its hard to find them all in one place.

Yeah it is, it's mainly the grammar which makes it difficult for me. I have no issue with vocabulary and properly pronouncing words

thats the circus sort of method but obviously very useful for education in general, slightly more mental exertion than glazing the words over with your eyes. Ive been learning 600 words a week with only a little study. Dont half ass your life just because youre in a foreign country

I'll look into it now thanks. My main issues are grammar and actually speaking since I have no one to practice with I can understand what the person is saying, but talking back and formulating proper sentences is tricky :/

I see advertisements for apps like jumpspeak where people brag about learning to speak languages like native speakers in 2 months, thats more the whole encompassing versatility of study

I only learn dead languages and looking back all of the words have indeed stuck, I read virgil in the original language, its a really useful study habit over glazing with your eyes, just slightly more thought intensive, it wastes more time otherwise I think to do things lazily

Just say that in those 6 years you travelled alot and never had a good chance to fully learn the language and that the basics you learned, you learned very quickly and you're getting better and better

Makes a negative into a positive real quick
