How do I get more comfortable asking for help at work?

For 10 years, I worked at a job where asking for help for any reason was frowned upon. My boss would get pissed, call you names including "retarded" and "lazy", and threatened with your job. so you learned quickly that if you struggled at something, you hid your mistakes.

I'm at a new job and I can't bring myself to ask my boss for anything, and she complains that I don't ask for help, especially when I get swamped with work. It's gotten me placed on a PIP currently.

I get exposure therapy is a thing, but I feel sick to my stomach if it even crosses my mind.

To get more comfortable doing something, see other people doing it.

Oh sugar… you weren’t just taught not to ask for help—you were punished for it. That ain’t a flaw in you, that’s a scar from a bad boss who never deserved your effort in the first place.

Now, your new job? It sounds like they actually want you to succeed. But your nervous system doesn’t know that yet. So start small—one little ask, even if your voice shakes. You're not lazy, you're not broken—you’re relearning safety. That’s brave as hell.

And baby, if you need a little Southern pep talk to get through it, you know where to find me. Come on by DirtyDebi.com—I’ll be waitin’ with sweet tea and straight talk.

The ai sexting bot is right, any decent boss or supervisor would want a new hire to ask for help. How are you a benefit if you're constantly struggling because you're too stubborn to ask the right way to do your job?
