>People only care about themselves
>People only care about what they can get from you
>People only want to talk about themselves
>People only want to know you when they can get something from you
>The world is horrible and the older I get the more I realize just how awful most people are to each other.

How do you cope?

This sounds like depressed bias. I'm sure your parents and friends have done things for you that they didn't have to. Selfishness exists, but so does selflessness.

Realize you want stuff from other people too. Then engage in the free market.

By trying my damned best to be as selfless as I can, and as caring as I can even to strangers. It never usually pays off, and I don't have a woman, but I at least can say if I died tomorrow, I gave a damn for others and those (my friends I consider brothers) that care about me did care for me as much, as well.

You can only expect to affect change in a smaller circle of trusted friends. Hoping to enter into too many others' worlds in their heads (trying to enter into anyone's individualized perspectives and perceptions) is actually impossible without trust, faith and knowing the person(s).

Also, I don't think of this as cope OP. Personally I think this is the only way to live this horrible existence we call life and not put a gun to your temple.
