should i go to college to get an IT job?
i'm thinking local community college
my family wants me to go to school and get a job
i told them i'd skip school and just work minimum wage but it's been over a year and still i have yet to find a job
i know even people with degrees struggle
it's strange really. i see my not academically adept peers succeed at employment where as i and many others who weren't necesarily smarter but had better stats on our papers n' shieeeet struggle to find a job
and i like computers well enough and figure it shouldn't be too hard once i ACTUALLY get the job if i do end up getting a job

tl;dr parents want me to stop neetfagging and i like computers

Depends entirely on where you are. IT jobs in the US are done for for new grads unless you got connections or start your own business, most of the jobs right now aren't going to AI but to offshore teams. I would know since I am part of one, I'm in mexico making 111k from taking your job. Hiring is still happening in the US, but you have to actually be good at your job to get hired, and then you don't really have a guarantee you won't laid off.

My advice from only 5 years in the field if I were you is to think very hard about whether you want to go all in on this field or if it's just a mild interested, you can't cruise anymore. There are lots of opportunities for you if you're in the US, if no name immigrantes can make it so can you just be realistic about what you hope to put in and get out of all this.

what do you do for a living anon?
>>33282018
but i am mexican sigh
guess i could just go back to the old cunt and endure the crappy copper wire tier internet or something and live on a homestead le breaking bad
ironically i think i got less of a chance at a job because i have papers
lots of my friends without papers can get jobs because the bosses can fuck them over so they prefer to pick someone they can screw instead of having to deal with proper "worker's rights" n shieeet

-> amerian
no, you should not. go check /g/ and look at all the laid off/no job threads. these are all american.

>ai
AI is not going to replace any good software engineer. it is going to make your entry into tech much worse though. i am very glad AI did not exist when i started learning programming.

i dont kow much about how the markets are in 'murica, but trying to become an egnineer (electrical, mecanical, whatever) or learning a trade is better imo. especially with the "made in USA" bubble you guys are dreaming up.

Your two mistakes are thinking that you can get an IT job from community college when most of the grads cannot, and thinking that entry level IT pays more than minimum wage, which it does not.
You can make $10/hr more working at Panda Express than at the local MSP.
IT is turning into something like auto mechanic work where the big boss pays the tech $12/hr and charges the end user $150/hr and pockets the difference.
Just because the big boss charges you $150/hr shop rate to replace the brakes on your car doesn't mean the guy replacing the brakes gets paid $150/hr, its more like $12/hr around here. It's the same deal with IT.
If you someday dream of a 1 in 10 chance of getting hired for $12/hr doing IT shit, I strongly suggest getting a $25/hr job at fast food to pay for the community college classes. Also for the 9 in 10 grads who can't get a job in the field, you can keep right on working at fast food.
