The same reason you don't pick up the phone when a telemarketer calls. You don't want what they're selling. If you're not an important person in their life they won't put any effort into interacting with you. You can call it cruel but it is what it is. To them you're just a random profile picture on a screen among millions of others. When they put their phones down you cease to exist. Online messaging started out as a way for people who already know each other to stay in contact over great distances. It was never designed to build strong relationships between strangers. It reduces the entirety of your being and essence into pixels on a screen. Humans just don't bond across digital mediums like they do in person so expecting potential partners to get passionate and excited about sending messages across a screen just isn't realistic.
