Getting older and never learnt a proper skill. How much of a stupid idea would it be to become a shoe cobbler or try to get into this industry? Even if it's just enough to make a living to sustain myself (already feel like I'll never have my own family). I'm trying to find that thing I'm passionate about and it's always been footwear for some reason. I've always liked the idea of shoe making or repairing but always told by family it's a waste of time. Then here I am years later in my 30s and did nothing

How do I even get into this industry? Should I find a local cobbler and ask if I can help him out on my days off from my min wagie job (even for free)

where the fuck did you get this idea? That has to be the most retarded thing I've heard in a while. It's not 1840 anymore, shoes are made in factories.

You watched the Thief and the Cobbler, didn't you? Anyway, there's some dude on Youtube called Mr. Porter, and he was doing cobbler content for a while, and he probably makes good money doing it. It's a really dumb idea, but it's not like there aren't a lot of rich guys that enjoy a good pair of shoes. I certainly do. I have twelve pairs of them.

I get the sense that it's like being a watch maker: much more attractive to those who have never done it.

one should always do what ones heart desires op. just do it, stop debating if you are serious else you run the risk of resentment later

but as others said, this is somewhat of an antiquidated job, as in, you are probably not going to pay your bills with that skill. it is a cool and nice skill, but the finished product will be way to expensive for the average joe. and a niche too. youd have to be exceptional at your art and craft and build a reputation, to be ordered by rich folk. this costs time. do you have that time op?
also, you could do that as a hobby. why do you have to make it your job

You only have one life then it's over for good. You may as well do what makes you happy.

Well, yeah man. Youโ€™d be filling a need. Do jackets, zippers, and handbags too. Iโ€™d do as you suggest and see if you can apprentice with someone. Having a small business is often no way to get rich but to make a salary and give back to the community and possibly provide employment and experience for others. Then, you get the excuse to write-off a bunch on tax. I am an oldfag myself. The world is a more pitiful place in many ways. There used to be reasonable places to alter clothes, or do stuff like shorten legs on a bed or table, alter clothes when people get fat. Little corner grocery stores, radio shack. Everything is cheap crap and Taco Bell now. Thereโ€™s really nothing dumb about it. In fact, it is probably one of the lesser crazy ideas, as far as unconventional ideas go.

Yeh I ended up going to see one. Talked about random stuff for a few hours and watched him work asking questions here and there

Then I asked if he minded if I dropped by on my days off and he said it was fine if he doesn't mind him working at the same time.

Reckon I can turn this into a paidnapprenticeship or paid arangement of some sorts or just take it as free learning and offering my Labor for free
