Or do you just keep being a manchild with more responsibilities you can barely keep with?

I'm not a parent, but I had a friend who was. He never got a job and became addicted to hard drugs and never really raised a hand to raise his children or teach them anything useful. I think his daughter went past the age of 7 without knowing how to read because her parents wouldn't teach her anything.

So no, I don't think just becoming a parent makes a child an adult. It depends on the person just as much as the circumstance, but I don't have kids so I guess I don't really know.

If you weren't responsible before you had children, having them isn't a guarantee that you are going to learn to prioritize yourself any better after they pop out.
I have 3 kids and it didn't change me much. And I've had relatives and friends that had more kids than that and never got their acts together.

Yes and no, you still have to actively make the changes—you just have another reason to do so.

If you ever saw Next Generation The Stone of Gol was an ancient weapon conceived on Vulcan during the turbulent times before the Time of Awakening. It functioned as a psionic resonator which focused and amplified telepathic energy, specifically violent thoughts and emotions, and then turned them back upon the person experiencing them. That's fundamentally what it's like. If you were true of heart and genuinely wanted the challenge of raising a good citizen for the polis, it will light a fire under your ass. If you are a manchild, it will sap all your energy and turn all your free time and time with family into watching Netflix and getting mad if you actually have to expend effort
