They test how much shit you can tolerate or how you deal with it. I say this based on my own past behavior, because I may have done similar things to people I used to talk to. It's a crappy way to test the strength of a bond, if you push too much and the other person never complains, they might just start to shun you.
Or maybe they enjoy treating you like a punching bag, that could be true too. Not every kind of attention is well intentioned.
