House
House
md5: 6a4bc1f6c821645b2b019543b836d9eb🔍
I'm 27, single, and was living with my parents while working a decent job making $60k after taxes. I only spend around $20k a year and save the rest.

A few months ago, my parents told me to find my own place because they wanted to move closer to my siblings, who live three hours away. So I started looking and found a $200k house—two stories, three bedrooms, big kitchen, two bathrooms, basement, and a backyard. It’s about 45 minutes from my job.

I had $120k saved and took out a loan for the rest. I bought the house, did some minor repairs, furnished it, and only told my parents after everything was done.

They got mad, called me an idiot, and said I should’ve just rented an apartment closer to work. I don’t get it. They’re the ones who told me to move out, the house is nice, and I have a car.

Did I actually mess up or are they just being weird?

That’s what I think too. Why waste a shit ton on rent when I can pay a little more and actually own a big house with a garden? I don’t really care about the 45-minute drive, seems like a fair trade to me.

>Be a good little goy and spend your shekels on a little rat box little goyim!

A house is an investment. I'm 26 and single and I have a $300k house here in South Texas. When you are ready to start a family you'll have the money and resources to do it once you find the right women to have a family with. My parents were happy for me. I don't know why the fuck your parents would want you to be in a shitbox apartment.

Honestly, I felt the same. I wasn’t even thinking about the investment side. I just saw the house and thought, why waste money renting a tiny apartment when I could actually live in a big place?

And yeah, when I start a family, I’ll already have a home ready for us. I really thought my parents would be happy, but for some reason they’re acting like I messed up.

The house is in a good area with decent schools.

I’m 28, and when I bought my house last year for about $270k in North Louisiana, my parents were pretty upset about it. I was already engaged to my now-wife and wanted a big house for our future kids, but they were pissed that I bought a house 40 minutes away from them instead of just looking for an apartment closer to the city.

Thanks, I agree, it’s definitely a win to own instead of renting forever. My parents aren’t bad people, just made me start paying rent as soon as I got a job, which was tough but fair. Honestly, I’m only paying about $270 more than when I lived with them. Hopefully things get better with time.

I don't see anything wrong with this. They should be proud of you for owning a home, especially if you're able to repay your loan. It's not like you have to live there forever, either. It's an investment, you can always sell it.

You make $60k a year and your loan is around $80k. That’s not too bad for your first house. I think you did okay.

Regardless, it’s not their house so it seems weird that they would be angry. Maybe they are just overprotective. In the long run, owning property is definitely better than renting.

Maybe there is something wrong with the property itself or the location and that’s what they are upset about. You did mention anything about what they said in your post.

Are the stockmaxxed or something? Renting and investing in the stock market can be more profitable than buying long term, but it's ultimately about personal priorities, nothing wrong with buying a house in a low cost of living area you love.

No, they just think it was dumb to buy such a big house when I’m living alone and that it’s too far from work. They say it would’ve made more sense to rent a small apartment, save more, and buy a house later with a girlfriend or wife.

My brother and sister saw the house at the housewarming and loved it. The only thing my parents might be right about is that I paid a bit above average, but it has a fully insulated basement I could easily turn into extra rooms if I wanted.

Pretty much, that’s what it sounds like. His parents are mad because they can’t control him or keep him as a son still living at home in his late 20s. They wanted him to rent a tiny apartment so they could feel superior, like, “Look at him struggling without us.”

My parents were the same way. After a month in an apartment, I bought a $170k house, two bedrooms, one bathroom, just to have my place. Went full no contact after that.

> rent a small apartment, save more

Unless your credit history is a wreck, I would think you would save less in most areas by renting rather than paying a mortgage. I still think you did alright as long as you don’t mind the longer commute.

Then again, you always have the option of selling in a few years. In the long run, property values will always go up. You could move closer to work then if you needed to. That’s what I did and it’s pretty awesome.

Yeah, that was pretty much my thinking too. The average rent for a one-bedroom was around $800, with the cheaper ones going for about $600, so renting wouldn’t have saved me that much anyway. Plus, I had a good credit score since I always used my credit card whenever I could to keep building it up.

Why are you focusing on the negative? Most boomers are narcissists to some degree. If you don't think exactly what they think and do exactly what they think you should do they flip the fuck out. Worst case scenario you sell for a profit or break even in a few years.
This question is fake though. How do you go through the whole process of buying, repairing, and furnishing a house and never mention it to your parents? If someone did that it's because they know their parents are idiots or control freaks. So there would be no point in asking the main question.

No, I wanted to surprise them. I didn’t do much in terms of repairs, just changed the locks and cleaned the pipes, nothing major. Furniture-wise, I only bought the bare minimum since some furniture was already there from the previous owners.
When they asked me if I’d found a place, I told them I was still looking. Then, once everything was ready, I drove them to the house and told them I bought it.
The most baffling thing is that it’s been two weeks since then, and they’re still pissed and giving me shit while I’m moving the last of my stuff into the new place.”

Let me know if you want it to sound more formal, funnier, or more emotional.

Pretending this is real. The thing about boomers you have to realize is it is all about them, they are in their own world. Don't take anything they say personally. Learn to take pleasure in annoying them. Don't second guess yourself based on anything they say. I grew up with illiterate illegal-immigrant parents so at least I figured out its best to form my own opinions independent from them from a very young age. Also, getting older, I realize when you get older young people just annoy you all the time even when they aren't doing anything wrong. Most boomers lack the ability to separate their feels from reals so they invent criticism and judgement for you youngins.

liberal ideas have always been popular with the upper middle class (both economical and intellectual) in the more developed societies, which tend to be big cities
if there's a considerable amount of people with liberal views in your city/town that means it's a good and prosperous place to live in
