Girl I'm seeing and have met a few times has just revealed she's a Genshin fanatic, and from a quick calculation she's very active in Discord - she sends an average of 50 messages a day to a Genshin server, and has spent about $1k+ a year on the game.

Is this excessive? What am I walking into here if I properly date her?

My ex spent $500/month on her gacha game.
It's okay to spend large amounts of money on your favorite hobby, but it is a "useless" hobby. If she's financially stable otherwise, it's fine.

there are way worse addictions out there, as someone who's spent a few dozen dollars on TF2 back in the day and also spent countless hours on mobile games (but never a single $ on them) I totally get the addiction appeal, especially if yall like 19 years old.

She's 33, if that matters. I think she's financially stable - I think my worry is more about the amount of time - 50 messages a day average non-stop sounds insane to me, but maybe not.

You should not date her. Not because of Discord or Genshin or whatever, but because you will be much happier dating me.

I'm not sure what's wrong with this. People have hobbies, if someone spent $1k a year on a sports activity, or drinking, or anything else it'd be fine?

Age doesn't really matter. It's a generation thing. Anyone born after 1990 will have obsessions like this, which they'll carry through their lives. If boomers had genshin growing up, they'd do it too.

I can easily pump out 50 posts on 4chan on a bad day and my girlfriend spends a lot of time bantering in Discord, I don't think the frequency of her messages really matters. I would just watch out for her tendency to prioritize video games over other stuff, especially at 33 years old. It's a bit pathetic tbqh.

Why? Is it just "video games bad"?

No, but if playing video games to the exclusion of other areas in life is pathetic. You can have hobbies, just make sure you have some balance. If someone spends upwards $1k/yr on a video game I would be wary of where their priorities lay.

I can tell you don't speak to women because you don't know that a big portion of gacha games, genshin included, have a majority female playerbase
