I was in the military ball twice. Once as part of the catering crew. second time with ex-husband who was in the field artillery.

You will hear about the biggest fish someone caught, or about the ride on top lawnmower someone bought.
Or if someone bought a house/set of golfclubs or joined a new gym.

Closest thing to a war story you'd hear is "a shame he cant see it" and thats quite much the end of it

You won't lmao. The closest you'll get is the tribute to POWMIA at the beginning of the event. Want war stories? Read books. Read memoirs. Want to dress up for a nice dinner? Join a local chapter or organization of some kind, most have an annual banquet. You military larpers get cringier by the day.
