You don't, you just have to embrace them.

How do u process emotions currently atm? I don't know your situation, and how you usually handle negative emotions, or what type of negative emotions ur feeling. I can only give generic advice, like "punch your pillow", or "journal about it", or "talk to someone you love," but I'm sure you know that already and are probably sick of hearing it, otherwise you wouldn't be asking about it here.

I think journaling is a good solution for most negative emotions. If OP didn't try it yet he definitely should.

I guess so, but a lot of people abandon it after some time, because they're not bothered to do it anymore, or that its time consuming.

Yeah I guess they do. It's one of those things where you kind of have to commit to it cause you know it's good. Like taking a shower or brushing your teeth.

I journal from time to time, mostly to give updates on my life for my future self. But it's a form of therapy none the less that'd I'd recommend to anyone.

In this day and age, most of us have time to watch hours of dogshit short form media content every day so I don't see what prevents us from writing for 5min a day.

Basically you buy an empty notebook and when you feel negative emotions you write them down at that time, you can include the date, weather, time, etc. It's like a diary but less childish.

It can help with addiction and other bad habits.
Like if you're a porn addict, and you feel an urge to watch porn, then you can just trick your mind to journal instead and as such you write about why you wanna watch porn. Maybe cause you're feeling lonely and bored at that time.
(I used porn as an example, it could have been anything else like alcohol or cigarettes)

Its just unloading everything you're feeling, or experiencing, or what happened to you that day onto paper.

You feel lighter after that, like a burden has been lifted off you as what you've been feeling is not cooped up inside you anymore. Your emotions feel more tangible, things make more sense. In a way it can be freeing, because no one is there to judge you, no matter what you've said or done, because its just you, and your pen, and the paper.

But it's also depressing in a way, because you're crying for help, but no one is there to listen or to give you advice. You're just talking to a brick wall.

Anyways, that's just what I think about it.

acknowledge them and their source, and figure out what steps you can take to overcome them

In this order I try to solve the problem causing the feeling, then if I fail at that I try to change my perspective about it, then if I fail at that I try to ignore and disassociate from it.

Acknowledge them, don't try to repress or reject them, recognize that thoughts & emotions are phenomena that you experience and not your actual self, consider why they exist and what purpose they fulfill, allow yourself to fully feel them. It's not bad to feel unpleasant feelings sometimes, most emotional suffering is actually created by rejecting & resisting negative those emotions. DON'T try to cope by repressing them with distractions (video games, substances, whatever).
