How do you become a better and more natural speaker and writer? When speaking, my thoughts outpace the conversation and I can't speak linearly about a single topic without confusing the other person in some way. It's hard for me to strike a balance between pre-empting everything they're going to say and what I need to say back and going with the flow. In writing, I overthink my sentence structure, my use of filler words, the order of my prepositions, etc and make changes but the final result feels dry and it also takes me a while to write simple things. How do I stop over-analyzing? Is doing drills/exercises the only way through this, or is this just misdirected anxiety or something? I'm a native English speaker who did well in language and literature classes as a kid but NA education is a joke so it's not exactly a glowing endorsement. (it took me like 10 minutes to draft this post)

Do the English duolingo. I'm doing it. They have the international phonetic alphabet. That's the weird little letters that tell you how to pronounce words in the dictionary. I'm pretty excited to get good.

Don't be afraid to have fun but try to speak clearly and concise. It'll help you think better too.

Read poetry out loud to yourself. You will not get a better answer than this. Actual Air by David Berman is up for free online; start there.

You're literally me! I cope by barely speaking at all. People think you're smarter when you talk less anyway. I say retarded shit if I don't take the time to think it completely through first. I wrote this post 4 times and I think it may be autism.

Read more. The way you learn to use language correctly is by observing other people doing it.

1. Think twice before speaking once. Know what you want to say before you start speaking.

2. For important things, make notes. For written things make an outline; for spoken, a couple of key words.

3. For really important things, rehearse. Winston Churchill would practice his supposedly off-the-cuff speeches in the bath, Politicians go through practice sessions with aides before debates or press conferences (except for Trump, and you can tell)

The myth of the inspired poet or speaker just dashing off brilliance is exactly that - a myth. They ALL go through notes, outlines, first drafts, second drafts, etc etc etc

I have had this problem for the longest time but I recently figured out why this happens and have managed to fix it. You might be having the same problem. First a few questions to confirm my suspicions.
Would you say you pick up on things faster than most other people? As in you learn faster?
Would you say your thoughts are constant and in multiple layers?
Have you always had the feeling you don't really fit in anywhere?

Read Keats' first drafts, Dickens's notebooks, Poe's essay on how he wrote The Raven, several volumes of Paris Review interviews in which contemporary poets and novelists describe their working methods, etc etc etc

Your social skills are 1 out of 10. Time to skill up nigga. Nothing to do with autism.
