I've got a 100K HECS debt. How much will this limit my options in the future? Is this something I should tell potential partners about?

It won't limit shit, if the skills you gained allow you into a career then the debt is worth it.

I did a basic IT degree. The reason it's so high is because I changed between degrees a lot.

My current profession is a Project Management in Building, current salary 110K. I never did any official studying for this.

i also '''owe''' ~$90k.
the amount of worry correlates directly with your situation.
i'm 31 living at home on roughly ~85k (construction estimator) and at 4% threshold i pay about 3.5k a year.
that's nothing for me, but if you rent, have dependents, want a mortgage etc it can be a worry.
just keep in mind to NEVER EVER make additional contributions. i'm personally convinced that every election cycle they will keep cutting HECS to some degree to secure votes.

I want to buy a house anon. I've already got preapproval with the home guarantee scheme (it diminished my borrowing capacity by 30k). Ideally I'd like to start a family one day so I hope this doesn't fuck me in the ass.

I don't like blaming people for my problems, but when I was in my early 20s everyone told me that HECS was the only good kind of debt, which was fine at the time but it sucks owing people/things money

your wage is good and that amount of debt will only be an issue if you wanted to borrow like $800k+ (which you realistically shouldn't be doing on your own anyway), but again you can't and shouldn't think of HECS as owing someone money. it's worse for you to think like this and make additional contributions which is terribly retarded considering we just got a fresh 20% cut - making all the people that had relatively recently paid it off feel like absolute retards.
HECS is a good system overall but i do agree that it should be discussed more frankly with students/young adults.

>your wage is good
ehh, not related but for the headache it gives it's not worth it, i wish i became an estimator for a high-end manufacturer instead.

hecs is about the same as american student loans right?

Apparently it "takes car of itself" but in my case of the 3 different employers I've had since having HECS, they all seem to ignore when I tell them I've got HECS. It's up to the payroll people to take the money out of your pay, if they don't do it then it never gets paid back. Until you do a tax return and get a $2k + tax bill every year.

it's not even remotely similar to american student loans.
you don't pay interest on HECS (it only gets indexed) and you're only required to pay it back after you reach an earning threshhold, and even then it's based on percentages (100k earner pays like like 5% a year that's deducted by the employer on a weekly basis).
you also shouldn't be worrying about 'headaches' if you're under 35. you have plenty of time to gain experience and move around.

the turnaround for being a pm is crazy
since i joined my role two years back there’s not a single person i was originally working with, they all stepped down because they couldn’t hack it and im getting near at point as well
we’re actually not that different in terms of age, im 27 turning 28 in two months, I feel there’s just not that many opportunities to start over again and make good money in aus if you fumbled your teens-twenties, even trades are hard as fuck to secure a apprenticeship + the terrible starting pay
