Is it possible to truly walk the path of forgiveness and reconciliation, both with someone else and with oneself?

Several months ago, I deeply hurt a very close friend out of hatred and resentment. I openly admit that I was a terrible person, dishonest, hypocritical, and the worst version of myself. Eventually, I managed to make amends. We became friends again, and I left those harmful behaviors behind.

But even though seven months have passed since the incident, I still feel guilty. I feel like complete garbage. Lately, I’ve been feeling stuck in every aspect of my life.

What should I do? What should I think?

John Marston didn't give a shit about being a bad guy. He didn't have some mental gymnastics about being a better person. All he wanted was to forget about his past and look after the family he cared about.

Be like John.

I've tried so many times, but I still feel stuck, like I'm anchored to the past. I keep reliving that moment when I proved to be someone awful. There isn't a single day or night when I don't overthink it and lose my mind over it.

Guilt is a healthy response to doing something wrong. Seven months isn't really that long in the grand scheme. You probably need to go through some kind of peak moment with him again in order to resolidify the friendship.

While you trouble yourself with morals, those who disregard them with be running circles around you. You will not find a shred of goodness in this world, and even if you did, it would be swiftly extinguished.

Is that supposed to be an excuse for OP to give up and stop feeling guilt? Do you do things that are morally irreprehensible because you know others do?
