before you tell me to learn it myself... ask yourself... does someone really get to be paid to teach people how to do it?

That sounds way too expensive. How long is the class? What is the certification called? Is it a certification or just a one time class? What does the class promise to teach?

Making a website isn't difficult. What is difficult is making a really customized secure website for big companies.

Absolutely not. Just use ChatGPT and steal styles from websites you like.

Every intro to computing course has tons of people in it. Every class after that will have fewer and fewer people. Its a good way to figure out if you actually have what it takes to do coding as a job because honestly its really boring if you dont find that kind of stuff interesting. If you dont want to get an actual degree you are better off being self taught and building a portfolio.

so... you want me to spend 3 times as much to learn a bunch of stuff i don't want to learn? because i just want to make one very specific website and maintain it. but i can't really teach myself because i need structure.

I am a professional software dev, and the entire job is learning things on your own without structure. All my classes just gave me the seeds for me to start seeking out more info. Most of my skills I learned outside of my bachelors classes. The degree itself is just a bullet point to get a job. I say be self taught or get a degree because a cert is much less impressive than a degree, and not much better than being self taught.

You have a specific idea on what you want to make, which is great because it means you know exactly what things you need to learn. If you make something you can ask people online to explain if its fucked up or not.

Tech moves fast, and web dev doubly so. Whatever standards they teach in that class will not be the same in a few years, so you should aim to be constantly changing out your skill set as new standards come out.

So you're saying that such a program is completely unjustified, should not existence, and is actually more of a harm than anything?

It probably has some utility to someone but 12k is expensive as hell. If you dont care about spending money then whatever.

If I were hiring for a job I would be more interested in someone with a solid portfolio than a guy who took a one year class and has an unrelated degree.

12k for a web design course sounds like some scammy bootcamp which makes you do crappy online courses

Well if you have 12k you dont need then go for it. Just know that self taught is a much better value. Tons of structured tutorials out there to follow.

What kind of site do you want to make? What is its purpose? To display your work/portfolio or are you selling things? Is it a service/webapp?

it has to have some use though.

it's just a fun game and place to chat while you play the game.

Okay so that would fall more under development than web design I think. You need to actually be able to develop the game and the chat, the site is just a place that its hosted. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Idk I didn't go to bootcamp so I can't comment if it could be better, but overall I enjoyed college. I skipped many insufferable lectures though and my grades suffered maybe. I started at 26 not 19... half of my classmates were still stuck in the "how is this useful" mindset. Overall I don't think I wasted 3 years, I have my whole life left to be a wagie. The "$1m lost wages by getting a degree" slogan didn't move me at all desu. The company I work for has only considered hiring 1 bootcamper but because he had insane charisma not what he learnt.

>bullshit quiz
thanks for reminding me of calculus o algo

I had a coworker who had a degree in english lit but he was self taught before bootcamps took of. And before I went to college I worked as a code monkey at a couple firms... and every interview felt like I had to prove I can code at all etc. And it felt like my bosses held me not having a degree above my head as an excuse to pay me less. maybe it was just in my head idk. ymmv.

if i learn solo and have questions, who will help me? getting advice and direction is like pulling teeth because people only help you when they want to and aren't OBLIGATED to give guidance. teachers are.
