What should you do if someone intentionally shoulder checks you or tries to hit you with their umbrella? I live in Tokyo and there's a fuck ton of people so sometimes there's no avoiding it. But I'm talking about situations where it's you and another person walking in the opposite direction. It's only happened twice in about 2 years, and this type of shit is new to me because I never experienced this in the US.

You might be better off asking a local. Japan is so steeped in social mores, I'd imagine there is already a specific procedure about how to appropriately shame someone who is being intentionally aggressive. It feels like that you'd be at risk of looking insane if you choose the wrong reaction. Which may become a problem if you do it in front of someone you need to respect you, like someone from work.

Are you sure you blend in? If you're not 100% fullblood Japanese, this could be racially motivated. What gave you the impression that it was intentional? IMO twice in two years is fairly frequent.

Yes both locals and foreigners think I'm Japanese until I say I'm not. Some old dude pushed his arms against mine when there's plenty of space between us in the train. I never got bumped into on the streets, but a vast majority of Japanese lack spatial awareness so I wanted to know what to do in advance.

Also they have a word in Japanese for people who bump into others on purpose. And people here seem to have a lot of pent up anger or someshit. Customer service here sucks ass compared to the US.

idk, shove back? Usually I just let these things go, personally, but I've not often had it be so directed like that. I suppose something you could ask yourself is what result are you looking for in your reaction? To get them to stop? To punish them? To defend your honor?

Locals just say they just accept it and argue it only happens in large cities like Tokyo. I've seen my Japanese coworker get forked by an umbrella and say nothing about it. They don't seem to care whether it's intentional or not.

The two times that it happened, I couldn't even react because it was new to me. Yeah, I'll think about that

If you're looking for an answer on what you "should do", sounds like this is it. I don't think it'll help you much to get a western answer here. Most reactions are just escalating the issue and I don't see how they would improve the situation.

there's no way
even japanese people who have lived in other countries have a distinct look to them
easy to tell who is and who isn't

but anyway, stop pretending you're japanese and start living life as your true self

You either tell the police or just keep your anger inside until you have a meltdown over a minor inconvenience. That's the true Japanese way.

Yes, I believe you over the locals who told me otherwise.
