Doctor proscribed Tylenol #3 for tolerable back pain but it's a controlled substance. Should I just ignore the prescription?

I'll just keep it in the fridge just in case. Maybe it'll be worth something later on.

BTW, Tylenol-3 codeine with tylenol in it. Codeine alone is dangerous because there are no side effects to overdosing on it. They add the tylenol as a non-separable carrier so that you will induce liver failure from ODing on the tylenol before you could OD on the codeine itself.
It's safer to keep around long term than other similarly strong narcotics for this reason, as it makes it unlikely to be resold.

What use would someone have to just keep it around?

Yeah, obtain the pills, but don't take them till you need them. If you ever do need them, you won't want to wait.
