I know I sound like a bitch but I have a great girlfriend who truly loves me and I've already cried twice thinking about how much I'll miss her for a year and a half.

The thing is I really should do it because it is the best thing I can do academically. Studying abroad will give me two different degrees instead of just one and help me learn another language, which I really value.

My girlfriend encouraged me to go and told me it was the best thing I could do. That she'd do it too if she was in my position.

How do I handle the pain?

She'll probably break up with you. Unless you two have a very solid, longstanding relationship, her feelings won't last. FOMO is a hell of a thing, man. If your girl is pretty, guys will be lining up to take her out. Shit, maybe I'm wrong and you're dating that rare kind of woman who is exceptionally faithful and patient. In that case, you won the jackpot. Just prepare for the worst and enjoy your time abroad. If and when it does happen, you'll be able to get over her faster.
