We got along pretty well initially due to similar personalities and life stories. But over time I noticed that he embodies many character traits that I started to despise in myself, being the worst one the overindulgence in self-pity. Otherwise, he's a pretty chill and suportive guy, but my gut is telling that I'll not move away from my depressed loser phase and "man up" in life until I cut off all contact with him.

if you think "manning up" means you cut off friends who might need you, you're far from being a man.

You're projecting your own insecurities on to your friend then blaming him for them, removing him from your won't fix yourself.

It sounds to me like you know what you want to do, you just want us to give you permission.

My best friends are content with being NEETS or not pursuing higher education for a better job than entry level. I still care about them a lot but I've had to distance myself a lot while I bust my ass to build a better life.

Don't cut them out, just don't be as available.
