How do I deal with online trolls? The ones which threaten you will all kinds of slurs and acts. I know it isn't something which will ever bother or affect me in day-to-day life, yet I can't help but feel that it does affect my mental health, even if its only a slight bit.
Affects me too. Others will say "just ignore it" but if you're like me that doesn't work. You can't just turn your brain off. I think you have to minimize the opportunity for them to call you a niggerfaggot or whatever in the first place. Don't make yourself a target. Don't use social media. If you have to then only interact with known friends. Stay out of arguments. On this site in particular don't get into arguments ever, even if your response is polite odds are the other guy won't do you the same courtesy.
What are you specifically dealing with?
Imagine being afraid of words on a screen
>>33385373Its just slurs and community specific slurs which offend me the most
>>33387051Are you someone well-known? I just avoid social media because I also canโt handle it.
An anti- orientation to trolling type behavior online is something lots of people have personal "styles" for. Personally it took time for me to grow in order to manage this sort of thing in a way I like.
Depends on what you mean by trolling too--if someone is doing something that's essentially machiavellian, that is detached, manipulative behavior aimed solely towards gains for themselves--that can be different from a lot of what may typically be thought of as trolling. A troll who is out mostly to cause harm is what I think most people when they think of their actions. They're looking to bully other people online acting out of malice. Much earlier in this site's history, there was a greater prevalence of a trolling that included the aspect of fooling someone, but was also such that if it wasn't stylistic or eliciting humor, it woudl be called a "failtroll" oftentimes.
I would call great trolls also to be wickedly funny, as much as they are effective tricksters. This can be used to overwhelm a troll but it's sort of an advanced kind of approach, and something that's fairly rare at this point--it's probably both harder to perform this sort of thing today, as well as being an action that succeeds less-so because people don't think of relating to something vis a vis humor for example with this topic.
Trolling is a largely negative thing generally. Effectively learning how to deal with it quickly is to me like being told just to ignore them, or to be yourself. Truly, as well, it can take time
