At what point is the hot barista more than just service-minded?

>walk into coffe shop for plain, black coffee to go
>completely empty
>barista is in the back, comes out when she sees me at the counter
>cute, blonde girl. hair in ponytail.
>make order, she engages in small-talk, nothing really flirtatious tbqh
>mid-sentence and while perfectly maintaining eye-contact, she lets her hair out and aggressively flaunts it in my face
>pretty much exactly like that Denise Richards scene from Friends
>girl instantly goes from cute to straight up model-tier
>I carry on the conversation without skipping a beat, but I felt that hair flip in my soul
>pay for coffee, casually round off the conversation, she's still pretty chatty, but not really flirtatious
>head out the door

I have a fairly strict policy on not flirting with girls on the clock, since it's usually safe to assume she's just being friendly and service-minded, and if she's hot like this one, she's probably bothered by guys all day to begin with, and I don't want to add to that, but this one was kinda hard to walk away from, bros. I'm not saying she was instant DTF at the mere sight of me or anything, but the urge to escalate the interaction was strong with this one. For what it's worth, there was no option for tipping in this situation, so she wasn't trying to coax money out of me or anything. I figure she just wanted to give me a show.

Should I have made a move? What would you have done?

Just to be clear, I have gotten laid starting in high school, I have been in relationships, I have always gotten attention from girls, and I'm currently somewhat hung up on another girl that I actually know personally, so I'm not so desperate that girls in service jobs are the only ones talking to me. It's just that this girl was so fucking fine, and that hair, my God, that hair.

Yeah, probably not. Those digits don't lie. I'm just wondering if it would have been kosher to at least shoot my shot, for future reference. Is it always bad form to hit on service workers?

Yes, as someone who wagecucked a lot in my younger years, it never works out. We may play it off but it's because we're getting paid to deal with you as a customer. Most of the people working are already in relationships and have other customers who hit on them (like how you're trying to).

Also, if you do and she doesn't reciprocate then it may most likely become a small inside joke among her and her coworkers every time you step foot in that store.

Also, a lot of burgerflipping girls know how to put up an act when the inevitable customer tries to flirt with them so it's most likely fake. If you have balls of steel then go for it but it'll most likely be a bust and you'll be a laughing stock amongst her coworkers.

Yeah, this is pretty much my line of thinking as well on the matter, which is why I did not make a move, despite craving it in the moment. I think I just needed to get this off my chest, since I felt regret as soon as I walked out, but I probably did the sensible thing, like you imply.

I've been a barista for 10 years and seen it all. Hooking up with customers and coworkers, seeing customers and coworkers hooking up with each other, and the resulting fallout.

In the case of customers and baristas, the barista will almost ALWAYS initiate, ask for your number, etc. If a customer tries to initiate, 9 times out of 10 it gets awkward REAL fast and the customer exiles himself out of sheer embarrassment.

Don't pursue. If she's interested, she'll get to know you.

This is the exact advice I was looking for. I have never worked as a barista, or any type of waiting staff for that matter, so I didn't know whether or not it was against the rules for them to ask customers directly for contact information, but know I know. Still, girls will be girls, and they generally prefer that the man takes the lead regardless of setting, but I should probably still continue to tread cautiously around attractive service workers.
