how do I cope with the fact that I've lost the ability to do the one thing I was put on this earth to do? I was supposed to be a novelist, but a few years back I had a stroke and completely lost the ability to write prose or dialog without having a seizure.

Even before the stroke I didn't really like being alive. I've had chronic depression since second grade and the only reason I've avoided killing myself for this long is that I feel obligated to stay alive for my parents sake. Writing was the one thing that really gave my life a sense of purpose–not happiness per se, but something I wanted to do with my life besides end it. Now it's permanently out of reach and every day it gets a little harder to keep going.

I'm starting to actually resent my parents for forcing me to live this long, and every time we have an argument I debate whether I really owe them this much when I never really wanted to be here in the first place.

Can you read? Can you edit? Can you criticise?

Publishers and movie studios rely on readers to help pick manuscripts worth producing. Writers depend on editors to help make their first drafts better. Book, theater and film critics help audiences appreciate the art form.

The point is that all these jobs ARE part of the creative process

Adapt. That's what humans do when they hit a roadblock or a pitfall, yes even in the face of strokes and losing their bodies. They adapt. They find a way.

Look up who Paul Alexander was. Longest living survivor of Polio, lived till 76. His whole body was paralyzed from neck down. He had to exist inside an iron lung, a giant metal tube, just to breathe. His existence was staring at a ceiling 24/7 for 70 years straight.

Yet despite that he wrote his own book, studied law, became a lawyer, graduated University. He did that using his own mouth and his thoughts. Sometimes literally his mouth, he learned how to write using a pen in his mouth.

He adapted. You can adapt too.

>how do I cope with the fact that I've lost the ability to do the one thing I was put on this earth to do? I was supposed to be a novelist,
Okay, that's a delusional belief.
Humans are not born with a pre-defined goal.
But that by itself isn't enough. Delusions don't come out of nowhere. What's OP's motive...
>Writing was the one thing that really gave my life a sense of purpose–not happiness per se, but something I wanted to do with my life besides end it.
Ah. Too fucking lazy to have a life purpose and so he copes hard by pretending that the one thing he was doing is his purpose.

Don't worry OP, you don't have a problem, you're just too lazy to solve your situation so now you pretend your life is RUINED so you can sit on your ass and accomplish nothing with a plausible excuse.

You wrote that post, so you can indeed write. Did it give you a seizure? If not then you could keep a blog and collect readers who are also interested in writing about the subject of being unable to write. ;-) Eventually your blog entries might be full-blown essays about being unable to write and then you could collect your essays into a book entitled something like "I Can't Write."

You said (I) have nothing to write about, so I'd be writing for the sake of it rather than to convey anything.

Jesus Christ this website is a den of misery and retardation

It's not better than navel gazing or eating for the sake of eating rather than sustenance, or cooking for the sake of cooking and not eating. I mean if you really have nothing better to do, like you're some disabled poor sod then, uh sure? Even then there'd be better pastimes than writing to communicate or convey nothing in particular. Reading and learning something for instance.

The first point they make is pretty true. Born to be a novelist? Gimme a break.

This guy's whole waifu avatarfagging is cock-guzzling tier gay but I don't disagree. Elaborate OP. If you can type this long into the thread without dying then surely you can type out a few paragraphs. Don't you have some anti-seizure pills or whatever the hell?
And no, no one's 'meant' to be anything. All lives are wasted. But it's still worthwhile to carve out your own path in life

because it's boring. writing is a medium to convey information. if you don't have any good information because you spend your whole life writing about nothing you'll only write boring stuff at best. most likely it'll come off as forced and pretentious instead because you are trying to squeeze water out of a rock and pretending that whatever you wrote is interesting

I'm not reading this thread. Maybe getting a scribe would be something of possibility. Cicero did this I think. Many people did. Alternatively, this is kind of like a social worker's wet dream, I'd say if the op is true. Maybe it would take a specially good msw, but a case manager via a local charitable organization that provides such services for your community

The sad truth is that getting what you get trumps getting what you want. Life doesn't work based on wants despite the psyops you see around you. As impossible as it might seem, you have to learn to live with the getting. And don't worry because you aren't the first and won't be the last to experience such soul killing disappointments. We don't live in an inherently good world, if you need such reassurances to wonder why bad things like this happen
