I recently took up writing and the more I try to find a topic that is not shallow to me the more grounded in reality my pre-existing conviction that all fiction is shallow and pointless becomes, it's like this transparent thing that became solid.

I know that this will be a point of attack for radical retards but I will share anyway that I have a distaste/shame for reading or writings stuff that aims to invoke some sort of emotion through means other than compassion / empathy / respect, anything that tries to equate the emotion that the subject character feels to that the reader feels.
And like, while I could just write this sort of stuff I don't want to write the things that I like to read, it feels one-dimensional in a way, also writing ironic shit feels extremely shallow.

Is there any way for me to recover? Or should I just move on to other things like writing a manifesto?

sorry I had made an example of second-hand emotion that I like reading, that should go before "And like", some call it "authentic fiction" but I feel like that's a larger venn circle

Makes no sense but yes fiction is inferior to historically accurate accounts

fiction is just applied non fiction. Great writers had real experiences. Go do something and forget about writing for a while

>all fiction is shallow
the fuck are you reading, Harry Potter?
You ever read Anna Karenina? Zola? Hemingway.
Man cโ€™mon. Fiction expresses the human condition more intensely than nonfiction ever could.

You do not start writing fiction with a "topic." You start by telling a story or by exploring a character. As you go along, your "This is how it would happen" instinct takes over and the message of the story is "This is how it would happen."

Frequently writing is not as shallow as we pretend our ability to understand emotion and the depths of what's being written is. Compassion for emotion besides compassion could go a long way towards opening this up for you.

Not op. But yeah. I think about the amount of fucking spectacular fiction that narrates through rage, fear, desire, delusion, hopelessness, and so on and so on. Of course joy is worth writing about, but the spectrum of the human experience goes out farther than that.
