Convergently very similarly colored to my favorite Cyprinid, the Northern Redbelly Dace, Chrosomus eos. They are both great bait and fun aquarium fish.

Colloquially if you are in the upper Midwest and the bait tank at the tackle shop says “rainbows” but doesn’t specify Chub or Shiner, they are probably Northern Redbelly Dace.

I enjoy the looks, ease of care and the wide variety of mouth morphologies, especially in the aforementioned Labeoninae

So do you keep them? I had a 55 gallon mixed species tank of Chrosomus eos and Umbra limi (an Esociform minnow) until it sprung a leak. The dace would shoal in the open water and the mudminnows would stack up in groups near the drift wood and in the plants. Every now and again a dace would get eaten by a mudminnow, but they preferred hunting scuds. The mudminnows were very fun to watch and the dace were a beautiful shoalling fish, so it was an excellent cold water display tank.

The Osteochilus posted earlier is my fish. I've had him for about 3 years and he hasn't grown an inch. He's been braindead easy to take care of but doesn't compete for food as well as my Dawkinsias and Synodontis he shares living quarters with. Not an issue as he'll eat anything green so I can throw in random plant trimmings

It's funny how cyprinids are so ubiquitous that their body plan was adopted as the generic "fish" profile for just about anything

Even then cyprinids have the Weberian apparatus, lack of true stomach, and pharyngeal teeth to save them from becoming 100% generic

Cyprinids are to the pokemon with the generic chancey esque smiley face while characins are the more charasmatic pokemon with the kanto eyes
