Bony fish regulate their buoyancy with swim bladders that they fill with air by gulping oxygen at the surface. One fish eventually took this to its logical conclusion and used the swim bladder to start breathing the air which was more oxygen-rich than the water. This is also why a land animal has never re-evolved gills, they're less efficient.

That's where you are wrong anon. Evolution often comes by the hand with competition. Why would you need to go a extra mile for nothing? Makes no sense, right? Exactly That's how evolution works. You see, Tiktaalik was just another "fish" pushed further up to the shores by competition. When the other "fishes" where busy swimming. This bastard was trying to munch on shoreline arthropods and other coastal/shore dwelling fiends. I hope this helps answer your question.

That's wrong though.
Swim Bladders evolved from the primitive lung, and later some fish re-evolved the ability to use the swim bladder to breathe air (Carp).

Maybe, but just as there are some humans who do crazy shit with high risk for no reason I think some individual animals also do it.
I have personally observed a type of fish (loach) in my area walking on land during rainstorms. One got stranded in my driveway and another in my basement.

The other fish sat their ass in the pond and stayed there while these ones just left for seemingly no reason. Yes obviously it's to look for new waterbodies, but why the fuck would they be moving uphill away from the water?
I have pictures of this, I'm considering writing and publishing it somewhere.

Bad bait. Eurypterids still were present and there were already giant "spiders"
>>5008732
Mind sharing what type of loach is it? Because loach is used for a very broad superfamily and from what I saw looking at different loach species, they have strong looking pectoral fins! So that may help that. And are somewhat related to carps and most are bottom feeders (both of those traits makes them resilient) so it makes sense that some are more adventurer!

They're weather loaches, migurnus. I'm in the northeast USA where there are some introduced populations near me.
I think that they go on land to bypass barriers. Some of the ponds I found them in have six foot high dams. Of course devils advocate is that someone could have released them there in the first place but who really knows. In Alabama they thought their spread would be stopped by dams but it didnt.

Oh yeah I searched a bit about loaches and they aren't native anywhere near USA... just take them out if you see them, or "study" them as you please. It's scary to think that loaches may end up spreading further so do your part

Their parents/ancestors did it and survived, so this behavior line kept on. Now why the ancestors fish did it, could be moving away from predators in the water or trying to snatch some food outside
