Would it be possible to make a wet-suit out of penguin skin?

i suppose but it wouldnt stay waterproof for long once removed from the bird. early diving suits were made of leather but probably required constant oiling and maintenance.

why not? maybe I am not understanding how a penguin's coat works but it seems quite durable?

I feel like comfort will be an issue but I don't think it will ever lose its waterproofing

They produce and apply oils to their feathers when alive to keep themselves water proof. You would need to do the same thing to the feathers once removed from the penguin.
The optics of skinning a few dozen penguins to make one human suit would also be pretty bad. Don't think you'd stay in business for long.
Penguins shed feathers and regrow them as needed, how to you intend to replace 1 of a billion feathers on the suit as they get damaged?
As a civilization, we move towards lower operating costs and maintenance commitments. As someone said above, old suits were leather and required constant attention. Modern dive suits are made of synthetic materials and require a lot less maintenance and time commited to keeping them usable. A penguin skin suit would be a step backward.

I'm a scuba diver. Wetsuits are not meant to keep you dry. They are designed to keep a layer of water in the neoprene layers of the suit. Your body heats up the water in the suit while you dive, acting like a layer of blubber to keep you warm.
I could potentially see penguin pelts being useful for a wetsuit design. What with the layer if thick feathers for insulation. But its outassed by modern wetsuit and drysuit designs.
Heres a crayfish I caught the other week while diving.

Chatgpt came down a little harsh on the idea, but I'll put this idea in the maybe pile for now.

why not make it out of seal skin instead? unlike penguins, seals deserve to be skinned so there'd be no moral issue

seal skin looks super thin compared with penguin skin

my guess is that since seals use blubber to keep themselves warm to a much greater extent then penguins do

I'm sure there's a way to incorporate their blubber into a suit, maybe do something like two layers of skin with blubber sandwiched in between?

in most cases the killing cattle and sheep serves multiple purposes like food and processing of skin and fur into wool and leather.both products still in common use today. We don't need to skin penguins to make effective diving gear.

No, not as much as penguins
Like I mean read the “cruel and grotesque” part
The freaking first adjective is “cute” so yes
It’s just penguins are just cuter, hence outrage and “grotesque” that’s it
>>5009294
And we don’t need to haphazardly shave sheep’s so fast their anuses are torn up, but we do.
Even though we have good cloth alternatives
>>5009305
Natural order is when sheep’s anus gets blasted
Got it

Wow that's cool. I didn't realize penguin had feathers like that.
>>5008825
This. They preen to spread oil and remove damaged feathers.

However, it would be possible to try and simulate this with synthetic materials if you wanted to make some kind of insulating wetsuit. It's probably going to weight a lot though.

Penguin skin is not thick. Feathers are not skin.
