I don't get why everyone's bitching. The plan has always been to make proxies of extinct animals by using shit like CRISPR to edit the genes of their closest relatives to be more similar to their extinct relative. Anyone who expected Jurassic Park bs instead of cold adapted mammoths was told they were an idiot, why is this controversial?

They already used Game of Thrones so what other property will they use for Reddit pandering?
Will they fuck up the Moa's genome to make it rainbow coloured so it resembles the bird from Up?

So not only are they gonna clone a bird which has never been done before, but they’re gonna clone one that is so big that even the largest birds alive today lay eggs that aren’t even half as large as what the developing embryo would need. Sure that sounds believable

>if they look like this animal then they are this animal
So if I take some cheap car and work on it so it looks like a Bugatti, using some original parts and some parts I made myself based on the schematics, then if I say I own a Bugatti I'm not lying...
Or if I gold-plate a tungsten bar, I can say I have a gold ingot and expect people to offer to buy it at the market price of gold even if they know the truth (surely they'll agree that if it looks like a gold bar then it's a gold bar!)
Or if I'm tasked with casting a white actor to play a slave owner in America and brought in an albino from Congo, I did my job perfectly because he looks white (we are using the "race is skin deep" concept) so he's the same as a white European.

Aldabra tortoises and Galapagos tortoises are now the same species. Coastal grizzly bears are now the same subspecies as Kodiak bears and not inland grizzlies. The number of insect species has been cut in half since so many look similar they may as well be the same anyways. Taxonomists on suicide watch

Correct but if they say it enough times they can try make it fact in the minds of as many people as possible. Like how they justify giving the wolves white coats by saying there’s evidence dire wolves had pale coats, even though most wild canids are pale but not white

No, or at least not most of the time. A white one would probably pop up occasionally but these weren’t like arctic wolves living in the frozen north. They lived on grasslands in places like Arizona and Bolivia. Colossal just goes with the statement that there’s genetic evidence that they had pale coats, but that’s like saying an African lion or coyote is white because it has pale fur. White fur makes no sense for a savannah animal. It’s purely to make them look like a game of thrones wolf. The genes that make these ones white come from a domestic dog

It doesn't matter how people call or classify things.
Mr. Shapiro and colleagues promoted and made everyone believe they were making thing A (which got people excited because of the implications and future applications of their work), when in reality it's different thing B (which doesn't have the same implications and future applications), only because *technically* you could use semantics to call B the same name as A.

That's like saying your new medicine can cure all types of cancer in children, and it turns out that it can only cure 17-year-olds because technically they can be considered children too. Still cool but nowhere near what they led people to believe.
It's blatantly misleading in such an obvious way.

Even worse, these don’t actually contain any dire wolf DNA. They just edited genes to produce what the assume is a dire wolf phenotype. So your Bugatti-mash contains 0 original Bugatti parts and you only change 0.07% of the existing parts

They're just using extinct animals as an excuse to study gene modification. The "dire" wolves are just genetically modified super wolves. Give it a few decades and they'll use what they learn here for designer babies.

top it off, the closest living relative to moa birds are tinamous birds that still fly, lol.

That said: moas actually do have several legitimate mummified remains of soft tissue. So a genetic copy is a lot more feasible than something like using dire wolf fossils, but again bird cloning hasn't really been done because of eggs.

It is more likely than not that Aenocyon dirus looked nothing like grey wolves. Its closer related to African Painted Hounds, Dholes, and jackals than they are to grey wolves. All of those canids look nothing like grey wolves in many aspects so its expected that 'dire wolves' probably wouldn't look much like grey wolves either.

>>5013698
Colossal confirmed that they are grey wolves with 10 gene edits. At most, these are just some custom wolfdogs and nothing more.
