Bumblebees seem kinda dumb desu, you can offer any other insect sugar and it'll very likely slurp it up, but you can shove the stuff right in a bumblebee's face and it won't recognize it. They seem to be purely driven by color, mainly purple. Also why do they keep raising their middle leg like that, it's a bit problematic.

Bumblebees will readily accept sugar water if offered, you dumb rock. If you come across an exhausted bumblebee, please give it some sugar water.

Bees can open bottles and play ball btw

They raise their legs, usually the middle one for balancing reasons, as a threat response. It just means they want you to back off a bit. They're quite smart for a creature their size, if it's not eatting it might be tired and partily asleep but when awake they're usually happy to lick up sugar water.

Checks out in part I guess I picked up this weirdo clinging to some grass after a rainy day, but sugar apparently wasn't good enough, nor any random flower, it had to be purple

Who cares about how intelligent they are, It's almost like asking about how hawk moths or certain wasps.compare. in my opinion passerines and hummingbirds are pretty brilliant for their size, but I can't prove it readily.
