Franz Marc, is one of my favourite painters of all time & used colours as symbolism to depict a particular emotion, like yellow for joy & blue for sorrow. This piece is called The Fate of the Animals & was one of his final works before heading off to war, where he was killed in battle.

I've forgot mention that this painting depicts a the legendary dog Gelert who protected a child from being eaten by a wolf. I love the worried expression of the hound.

This was the 1st ever reconstruction of a mammoth that was made in the 19th century. Looking at it makes me laugh every time.

This one was made in 1515 by Albrecht Dürer who never set foot in Africa & made this masterpiece.

Any1 know why ornitholocigal art looks oriental-ish sometimes (flattened washed colors, stiltedness) (ignoring backround ofc), preservational issue, fewer materials?

I assume you're talking about Audubon. I can think of a few reasons for one they're water colors not oil paints they weren't as vivid to begin with and some bleeding through is to be expected. For two and this is a big one he killed almost everything he painted and then held them up with wire wrapping to paint them so they either look stiff/dead or are posed too dramatically.

As far as I know he was mostly self taught. So that itself might have played a role since a lot of weird aberrations pop up like that with just people who aren't being taught to do things a certain way.

Upon further reflection Audubon died before Japan even opened trade so there's not even much of a chance he could encounter any of japanese print art that the French art scene became obsessed with the decade after.

That's pretty good considering the circumstances desu . Imagine just getting second- or third-hand descriptions of the weird creases and bumps on a rhinoceros skin when the only thing you've ever seen IRL that comes close are some local lizards or turtles.
