Well California is about to find out. I imagine it'll have some pretty tangible impacts on bird populations. California is already rapidly undergoing desertification ecosystem collapse along the west coast seems inevitable and progressively weirder shit is probably going to happen.

Could it be related? Less nuts and shit to eat, so they get hungry and look over at mr. mouse with envy

Maybe. Idk how much water acorns take but if it's anything like almonds or walnuts it's a lot. If a place is becoming more arid and there's less nuts that's less protein for the squirrels and they'll find a way to get it.

Looked it up out of curiosity. It's ground squirrels (i know lame)and it's specifically voles they're preying on. Voles had a massive population surge so now the ground squirrels are eating them.

Most herbivores are occasionally carnivorous while a lot of carnivores will sometimes eat grass and shit. I've known about Squirrels eating meat for decades before this new news came out, it's been a thing people are just noticing it now.

Stupid idea. You will get cockroaches AND squirrels/rats, the later will just flourish eating the formers without even making a dent on their population.
