Just got hired at USPS as a CCA. Anyone got real advice?
Just got picked up as a City Carrier Assistant. Haven’t started yet, orientation’s coming up. I’ve done delivery work before so I know how it is out on the street — long days, weather doesn’t care, people don’t either. Whatever. I’m not scared of working.

I know this job isn’t easy. I’ve heard about the walking, the heat, the long days. Cool. That’s life. What I care about is how to do it smart. How to not burn out early. How to move up. I’m not here to coast — I want the check, the benefits, the career.

What’s the real day-to-day like? Not the “omg you’re gonna die” Reddit takes — I want the straight facts. How do you stay efficient? What gear makes a difference? How long did it take you to get into a rhythm?

Also, what’s the money really look like first year? I’ve seen numbers from $40k to $60k depending on OT. Is that legit?

If you’ve done this job, drop some real insight. I’m trying to hit the ground running. Orientation is Monday so yeah

I worked as a FedEx driver for two years
Aside from a few issues it was really nice
Flexible schedule
Most people are happy to see you
Exercise and fresh air were nice (if you can handle the physical nature of the job)
150 to 200$ daily for 6 to 8 hours of work

I've done delivery since 2021, did seasonal work with UPS, DoorDash for quite a while, Uber Eats, Amazon Flex, and Instacart. Drove for a short period of time for a Amazon DSP as well. I'm looking forward to it but just don't want to fuck it up, you know?

What was the best/worst one and why?
Because Amazon drivers have tracking devices basically shoved up their asshole and they are watched constantly, which fucking sucks.
That, and Uber drivers have to deal with drunk femoids and nignogs who might rob them

FedEx was nice and chill.

I did Uber Eats, never drove passengers. Best was DoorDash by far. I miss it and if I didn't get deactivated, I'd still be doing it and wouldn't even be bothering with USPS

Hired on as a PTF for almost two years, it sucks.
Experience differs from office to office. Some are smooth, other not so much.
expect to work and get alot of OT.
Just make sure to dot your i's and cross your t's on forms and you should be good.
One thing that I always recommended is to have some kind of audio saved to your phone while your out delivering. A few episodes of a podcast, an audio book, maybe an album or two. Just something to help the day go by.

Whats wrong with USPS?
I never worked for them, only FedEx
Only issues I ever had were from some bitchy floor managers that were drunk on miniscule amounts of power, but could be dismissed through your contractor company

We're allowed to listen to music on our routes? That's cool. Is OT time and a half or double time?

It's not that we are allowed and more that supervisors don't bother to check unless they are assigned to. So far I haven't had any issue with having earphones. Over time is 1.5, penelty time is 2x

FedEx guy here again.
I listened to podcasts, audiobooks, and music constantly on rout unless I wanted some peace and quiet.
I smoked cigars driving around town with the doors open and wore sleeveless shirts in the summer.
I also had a near perfect delivery record and routinely bailed out drivers who's trucks broke down, while also taking all of the boxes that were 'too heavy' for most drivers (mostly women)

9/10 excellent working environment.
Only downside was the lack off AC in the trucks.

Can agree on the vehicle thing. Most routes use still use the LLV, the classic looking mail truck. Those things are over 30 years old and are breaking down constantly. More than likely what ever vehicle you get per day will only allow you to drive from point A to point B. If you want to get trained on the other vehicles, just keep bugging your supervisor on wanting to get trained on them.

>just keep bugging your supervisor on wanting to get trained on them.
No point.
More training and new vehicles means more supervisors up your ass making sure you don't scratch their new toys.
I'd rather drive the piece of shit truck with no shocks that no one cares what I do with it.
I can sleep in, leave my home by 10AM and still be back at the station by 5PM and still get paid more that most people with a college degree.
>Also, I do have a degree, but I did not take out loans.

good luck getting through these 80 work hours per week

>80 work hours per week
Refuse
You hold all the cards
There is a MASSIVE driver shortage to the point they can barely keep pace.
The controllers will be grateful for someone who shows up and says "I can only work 40, MAYBE 50 hours a week with overtime"

Its called a sellers market, learn2capitalism

Good shoes. Speak to colleagues but odds are the shoes the company offer will fall apart in a week, and they may offer a fixed lump of cash if you go out and buy your own
