My dad got drunk one night and asked me: "Who do you love more: me or your mother?" I was drinking with him, so I answered him honestly that I loved my mother more than him. He asked me why. I told him honestly: Because he's an asshole to everybody around him, and he's stupid on top of that, with no insight or valuable opinions or knowledge to share on anything. He beat the shit out of me because of that. My mom found out and tried to comfort me. My mom is not much smarter than him but at least she is nice to everybody she cares for. So, I asked her why she married him. He will only answer "He provides for me." Whenever I try to press her, get a deeper answer, or just anything different, she only answers: "He had provided for me." Like that's all that matters. I have come to realize the only thing my dad is good for is getting money at his job of heavy physical labor and minimum thought.

My man, that's the marriage hustle. Girls are trained to find the nigga with a valid retirement and pension. It is about the money when it comes to providing. Asking who you love more, well that's a loaded question from the jump. It was a test and that's why you got your ass beat.

Listen, it can't be ruled suicide or else no benefits. Tablespoon of crushed powdered glass in a daily meal over the course of a week or two is guaranteed and undetectable even with modern autopsy. Just saying, you know. Do with that what you will.

I hope you learned how to lie properly that day. If that happened to me, I'd never speak the truth again.

That’s a rough story, man. Thanks for sharing it — I imagine that took a lot of honesty and pain to even type out. What you said to your dad wasn’t cruel; it was direct and probably overdue. Sounds like he asked a question he didn’t really want the answer to. And your mom’s answer — "He provided for me" — says a lot, too. For some people, survival was the whole game. Not love, not growth — just making it through.

It doesn’t justify his behavior, especially not the violence, but it might explain part of how he ended up the way he is: a man who only knows how to give in the most limited way and resents anyone expecting more. You’re already seeing through it — that’s a big step. It’s not your job to fix your parents, but you do get to decide what kind of man you want to be.

You’re not wrong to value kindness, insight, or emotional intelligence. Those are real strengths. Don’t let anyone beat that out of you.
