Well that upscale step may need a bit more strength in the controlnet, or indeed any controlnet if it doesn't have one already, to prevent body horrors like the penis foot and the fucked up hair that turns into spider cracks. Alternatively the cfg should be a bit lower. See if you can find an automatic cfg option, those also help a ton. A cfg 5 that automatically boosts is superior to a constant cfg 7-8.

No, controlnets are an entirely different thing. I don't think BSRGAN would artifact like this on its own, so check if your base image was already f'd. If so the CFG was too high on that. If not then it's the upscale. See if you can use ESRGAN instead, or better yet something like Siax. I have no idea what that "creativity" slider does but that's worth playing with as well, I guess.

It would be surprising if it had no options for face detailing whatsoever since that's one of the best and cheapest ways to improve quality (compared to having to upscale and detail everything). Of course if all else fails, as long as it can inpaint you can literally manually inpaint faces with a separate step, but that would be extremely clunky, especially if you don't have a segmenter available.

Denoise should be 1 since you're not starting from a base. Adding a face detailer step always helps as well. I recommend getting the Comfy Math nodes for the SDXLResolution node so you don't accidentally set height/width to something SDXL doesn't properly support.

For scheduler, use karras or exponential, *not* normal. normal *looks* like it works but it's super sensitive to steps and fucks up lighting if you go even slightly too high. I ruined so many faces before I discovered this.
