PAG is a mixed bag; it does improve quality but also slows things down a lot. Using something like automatic CFG also gives you access to things like the "excellent attention" preset that obviates a lot of the need for PAG, as does doing img2img/upscaling on images that are already halfway decent. Alternative samplers are also worth exploring (I'm getting some interesting work done with dpmpp_dualsde).

His workflow uses a .26 denoise and a 720 guiding size; that's not going to do too well if the face is fairly small. Try a 1024 guiding size and a .5 denoise. I also don't know why the model strength is set to 0.9; that may be necessary for some LoRAs but it should generally just be kept at 1.

I gave up on it and moved to doing a seperate face detail using photoshop to marquee a square around face pasting it into a new image then increasing by at least 200%
then detailing before resizing 50% and pasting it back in
kinda annoying but it is the best method to get a really good likeness

I do something like that, but inside ComfyUI. Try the Inpaint-CropAndStitch node if you want to automate that stuff. This gives you full control over the inpaint process and also allows you to do things like color match after generating, which the detailer has no options for.

Well that looks pretty good to me; it's never going to be perfect unless you get lucky with the seed.

If all else fails you could invert the process -- generate the image with an Ana you like, then remove the background and inpaint it with the more flexible settings. Obviously this isn't going to work with complicated scenes where you have lots of interaction.

Upscaling is its own story. Many ways to do it, some slower/better than others. See if you find something like an upscale with Siax and then optionally a downscale acceptable; this is good enough for most purposes. LDSR is another good pick, it's very slow (by default it uses 100 steps which is ridiculous; 50 is hardly worse) but gives excellent results without tweaking. Beyond that you're looking at things like SUPIR and maybe custom tiled upscales.

"Ultimate SD upscale" is always mentioned as a popular option too, but I've never been too impressed with the results for how slow it is if you turn on the options you need to get quality. If you "just" want higher res then it's OK, but in that case you might as well stick with simple upscales by model like Siax.

Faces are garbage? That's the first time I heard that complaint. Flux is generally much better at facial resemblance than SD. The big problem with Flux (other than not being able to really do porn) is that the skin texture looks plasticky and unnatural, but not that the resemblance isn't good. Are you using Flux.D? The Flux.S model is known to be worse.

That the face doesn't change much with detailing would not be unusual; Flux already tries very hard to "do the best it can", unlike SDXL, so if it starts from a base that's already very close to what it would produce as an end result, it may not do much of anything. Detailing is simply much less necessary with Flux.
