I think it is one of the best books ever. It applies so much today.

Here is a synthwave song with a monologue clip from the climax of the book. Spoiler alert.

I've read all of the dystopian novels. The best is A Brave New World. Super accurate. Except he didn't quiet factor in how powerful AI would be.

Yeah, Fahrenheit 451 hits hard too and is a call to arms against censorship and control.
But Brave New World warned us we’d stop caring altogether.
We’re not being silenced necessarily in the end, we’re amusing ourselves to death.

It's good, if you're looking for a 'guy from the past predicts the future' look into that and Brave New World, and we're in a weird combination of both. 1984's newspeak which is well... just the news and I guess podcasts like JRE. Then Soma from BNW, which is seen in the device centered nature of everything (imo). Probably the more important bit from BNW now is the re-writing of history as we're actively living through that.

Instead of actually questioning authority you supplant the act of rebellion by replacing constructive narratives with erratic ones.
Criticize Donald Trump instead of worrying about what the Rothschild's are up to.

You're suspicious of real intellectualism because mainstream intellectuals support the status quo instead of deconstructing it.
Talking heads are supported by publishing houses, podcasts, think tanks, etc.
You don't see people like me on television having these kinds of dialectics because it would undermine your mainstream values.
You can observe power dynamics without partaking in them. But you're subject to suppression as well. We all are. If you believe you have some "secret" information you're just using a narcissistic defense to believe you're special and above the invisible hand that drives you to consume and produce.
There is no opting out bitch. Even the big bad wolves in office are controlled by the systems they thought they would revolutionize but power changed them instead.

Finally, someone else understands this. Both books cover critical topics: 1984 covers the use of constant conflict, propaganda, and language manipulation to control people and Brave New World covers the use of pleasure to distract people. Authoritarians use both sets of tactics, which makes sense given the historic and current overlap between the political, economic, and cultural elite.

>a call to arms against censorship
>According to an interview in Listen to the Echoes: The Ray Bradbury Interviews by Sam Weller, Bradbury recounted that he told the students they were wrong about interpreting the novel as solely about censorship. He emphasized that the book was more about the "moronic influence of popular culture through local TV news" and the proliferation of mindless entertainment, which leads to apathy toward art and intellectual pursuits. When the students persisted in their interpretation, Bradbury became so exasperated that he used strong language ("Fuck you") and walked out of the lecture, vowing not to give another talk on the subject.
it's still the same old story kek
cucked out of the interpretation of all he'll be remembered for

Well there's no denying most TV is utter brainrot shite, I just think it's really funny that this mythical interpretation has completely displaced his actual intent. So it's like he failed, when you think about it.

Most modern literature is as well. Unless someone can give me scientific evidence that books, television, and video games are somehow more or less inherently intellectual than the others I stand by my initial assessment.

Homer would have probably considered Bradbury's works to be mindless entertainment because you don't even have to memorize them.

Orwell was borderline schizo to write it when he did. Equally unhinged as it is enlightened. It's one of the books virtually any and all future dystopian works take from like Fahrenheit 451. Like The Hunger Games or shit like Divergent. It's still influencing today.

Like Animal Farm it was a reaction to the totalitarianism of Stalin and other contemporary Marxist-Leninist regimes. Nothing schizo about writing about what was then extremely relevant.

Well I mean writing it expecting it to do well. Both Animal Farm and 1984 barely got published and the initial reaction wasn't great. Iirc both books were slandered as being commie in America yet got banned from the USSR at the same time lol. The general population had trouble wrapping their mind around it. He sadly didn't live to see people really start to understand.

Cherry picking fallacy. Just go to your local bookstore: coomer novels for wine aunts, mystery novels recycling hundred year old Agatha Christie works, rewrites of classic literature with race or genderswapped protagonists, AIslop science fiction, a thousand different get rich schemes, and political science sections filled with theses that either all white people are racist or that Democrats are the REAL racists. And of course the "Holy" Bible; the best selling document in history and also one of the most irrational, hateful, and dangerous.

No one will argue that there isn't good literature or bad television; the argument is that quality is not mutually exclusive to medium. You and Bradbury can hold onto your elitism all you want, but until you can meet some burden of proof regarding your claims I don't have to take them any more seriously than a belief that the Earth is flat.

it's just an idea of a dystopian future.
Brave New World is another idea of a dystopian future.
In reality it'll never get that bad/
It'll never get so bad that people actually start revolting, but just on the threshold.

My point has always been that Bradbury's claim that modern forms of entertainment inherently lack the quality of the old is unsupported and elitist. Television, for example, is essentially a form a recorded theater and thus there is no reason to assume it cannot at least potentially have the same quality and respect as theater without actual scientific evidence.

Viewing it from the perspective of subjectivity also proves Bradbury's claims to be incorrect. Either art is subjective and cannot be held to be "highbrow versus lowbrow" or it has some measurable quality in which case burden of proof is on those claiming to measure it.

Great book honestly. Its hard for me to recommend it since its so fucking bleak but genuinely a good read, really makes you feel things which imo is the entire point of a book.
Entirely unrelated but No Longer Human is also a great book, one of my favorites.

The world we live in today is a mix of 1984 and Brave New World.

If I remember correctly, 1984 comes with an epilogue which many find boring and skip over, but you should not do so. It provides additional knowledge about the world and language used in the novel, and the discussion of Newspeak is highly relevant to the self-censorship we being used today by those who fear demonetization.

I know Reddit is hated here, but I have one nice thing to say about them. A few days ago I saw someone self censor repeatedly and he got yelled at by multiple people to stop it. I liked that.

I read both these books in either middle school or early high school, as well as Fahrenheit 451. The third is also important because we are now living in a time of book burning and book bans. Books are being removed from libraries for things as innocuous as a depiction of a nude statue from ancient Rome.

Yeah 1984 was a good read. Relatively simple and easy to digest. His other books, Road to Wigan Pier, and Down and out in Paris and London are also excellent. His other works I found a bit dry and boring.

You you could also try Mark Twain's short stories, they're quite fun, and brief to read.
