Is this book worth reading? (Recommend something better if not)

I think it is one of the best books ever. It applies so much today.

Here is a synthwave song with a monologue clip from the climax of the book. Spoiler alert.

But Brave New World warned us we’d stop caring altogether.

It's good, if you're looking for a 'guy from the past predicts the future' look into that and Brave New World, and we're in a weird combination of both. 1984's newspeak which is well... just the news and I guess podcasts like JRE. Then Soma from BNW, which is seen in the device centered nature of everything (imo). Probably the more important bit from BNW now is the re-writing of history as we're actively living through that.

Finally, someone else understands this. Both books cover critical topics: 1984 covers the use of constant conflict, propaganda, and language manipulation to control people and Brave New World covers the use of pleasure to distract people. >According to an interview in Listen to the Echoes: The Ray Bradbury Interviews by Sam Weller, Bradbury recounted that he told the students they were wrong about interpreting the novel as solely about censorship. He emphasized that the book was more about the "moronic influence of popular culture through local TV news" and the proliferation of mindless entertainment, which leads to apathy toward art and intellectual pursuits. When the students persisted in their interpretation, Bradbury became so exasperated that he used strong language ("Fuck you") and walked out of the lecture, vowing not to give another talk on the subject.

Cherry picking fallacy. Just go to your local bookstore: coomer novels for wine aunts, mystery novels recycling hundred year old Agatha Christie works, rewrites of classic literature with race or genderswapped protagonists, AIslop science fiction, a thousand different get rich schemes, and political science sections filled with theses that either all white people are racist or that Democrats are the REAL racists. And of course the "Holy" Bible; the best selling document in history and also one of the most irrational, hateful, and dangerous.

No one will argue that there isn't good literature or bad television; the argument is that quality is not mutually exclusive to medium. You and Bradbury can hold onto your elitism all you want, but until you can meet some burden of proof regarding your claims I don't have to take them any more seriously than a belief that the Earth is flat.

My point has always been that Bradbury's claim that modern forms of entertainment inherently lack the quality of the old is unsupported and elitist. Television, for example, is essentially a form a recorded theater and thus there is no reason to assume it cannot at least potentially have the same quality and respect as theater without actual scientific evidence.
Anonymous No.936072921 [Report]
>>936072813
Viewing it from the perspective of subjectivity also proves Bradbury's claims to be incorrect. Either art is subjective and cannot be held to be "highbrow versus lowbrow" or it has some measurable quality in which case burden of proof is on those claiming to measure it.

The world we live in today is a mix of 1984 and Brave New World.

If I remember correctly, 1984 comes with an epilogue which many find boring and skip over, but you should not do so. It provides additional knowledge about the world and language used in the novel, and the discussion of Newspeak is highly relevant to the self-censorship we being used today by those who fear demonetization.

I know Reddit is hated here, but I have one nice thing to say about them. A few days ago I saw someone self censor repeatedly and he got yelled at by multiple people to stop it. I liked that.

I read both these books in either middle school or early high school, as well as Fahrenheit 451. The third is also important because we are now living in a time of book burning and book bans. Books are being removed from libraries for things as innocuous as a depiction of a nude statue from ancient Rome.

Yeah 1984 was a good read. Relatively simple and easy to digest. His other books, Road to Wigan Pier, and Down and out in Paris and London are also excellent. His other works I found a bit dry and boring.

You you could also try Mark Twain's short stories, they're quite fun, and brief to read.
